I only saw the musical Les Miserables as a production in our Church. I was in College then, and since my dad played the role of Javer, the lead antagonist, he gave me 3 tickets to the show. I brought my friends Tupe and Zenie along.
My favorite character is Eponine, whom Lea Salonga plays in the real thing. Eponine is Marius’s friend who is secretly in love with him, but Marius is in love with Cosette. Eponine laments her plight by singing “On My Own.” This song was popularized in my teens when the character Joey sang it in the television show Dawson’s Creek. It was her song for her bestfriend Dawson.
Eponine loves him but only on her own
Later on, she gets wounded in a skirmish. Marius holds Eponine, and instead of feeling sad that she is about to die in the rain, she assures him that a little fall of rain can’t hurt her… not when she can sleep in his embrace at last. This is my favorite part of the play, the song “A Little Fall of Rain.” It always brings tears to my eyes.
a little fall of rain can hardly hurt her now
So don’t you fret, Monsieur, I don’t feel any pain. A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now. You’re there, that’s all I need to know. And you will keep me safe. And you will keep me close. And rain will make the flowers grow.
