The photo below has absolutely nothing to do with Swensen’s. It has everything to do with Breakfast at Tiffany’s, though. Black dress, pearls, sunglasses… get the connection? š
Okay, moving on to what this post is supposed to be about, which is breakfast at Swensen’s.
Swensen’s has always been one of my favourite go-to restaurants here in Singapore because they have consistently good food and delicious desserts. Their chocolate malted milkshakes are my favourite.
TheĀ first Swensen’s I ever tried was in Bangkok, Thailand. My friend Cate and I were wandering through a mall by ourselves when we spotted two people eating yummy-looking ice cream cones. We wanted to buy some, too,Ā so despite knowing there was a language barrier, we dared to approach them and got ready to have a difficult conversation which could involve a lot of “charades.” Cate pointed at the ice cream and asked, “Where where?”Ā in purposely broken English.
“Just take the escalator, and once you alight, turn left, and you’ll find it there,” the guy replied in perfectly fluent English.
We were stunned, and we later laughed because she was the one who seemed like she had terrible English in that conversation!
So we followed his instructions, bought our ice cream, and it was love at first bite for us. We flew back home to the Philippines after that, and a few months later, we migratedĀ to Singapore, and we were happy to find that they had Swensen’s here as well. We’ve been here so many times since then, ordering everything from crustacean pasta to sizzling brownie sundaes to cheesy mussels.
But the funny thing was, I had never ever tried their breakfasts before, until last Sunday. We were sending our friend Dred off to a 2 month business trip in the Philippines, so we decided to have breakfast at the airport before she flew off.
I was the first one to arrive, and I was ushered to a tableĀ across a very annoying overly affectionate couple which really put me off my food. Luckily, when my friends arrived (led by Nantoy who said he wanted to tell the waiter that he was here to join his blogger friend, OMG), they asked to be seated elsewhere, so I could enjoy my meal without wanting to hurl.
There were 6 of us, and we each ordered something different, coincidentally, I think. I ended up sampling a bit of everyone’s dish.
We were all very happy with our food, so much so that we already made plans to come back when it’s Merci’s time to leave for the Philippines.Ā But while we liked the mains, the sides left a lot to be desired. I definitely did not like the potatoes, which were dry, and as for the mushrooms, I’ve never really liked those kind. I would have preferred button mushrooms.
My favourite dish was the waffles with chicken, which was Nantoy’s order. The fried chicken was so tasty and tender and crispy! I am definitely ordering that next time!
After breakfast, we accompanied Dred to the departure area and posed with the merlion before hugging her goodbye. We will definitely miss her but we’re sure she’ll have a lot of fun there and besides, I’ll be seeing her there in May!
