… grouped all my Nips candies by color and ate them in order of perceived sweetness of colors: green, yellow, orange, red, then brown.
… spent so much time in the library that I got nicknamed “mother brain” by my teacher and classmates. I only read pocketbooks, though. Hardly mother brain material!
… was a boring goody two shoes consistent honors student but did not get an award on graduation day because I was so shy that I had few extracurricular activities. My school supposedly chose its honorable mentions based on a “wholistic” perspective.
… climbed trees, and ran around playing all kinds of active games with my friends, my favorite game being hide and seek (or taguan as we call it in the Philippines) and cha-cha, which is not the dance, but a baseball-type game that involved rubber slippers as bases and the ball.
… came from a family that could not afford to buy the real monopoly game board, so I created one of my own using a folder for the board, used bondpapers for paper money, a dice from another cheaper board game, and wooden chips for movers.
… loved my dolls so much and spent a lot of time sewing dresses for them.
… did not know how to smile naturally for the camera and literally said “cheese” whenever asked to pose, resulting in me looking not at all happy in my pictures.
… liked to draw pictures and cut them up and stick them to the insides of notebooks, like photo albums.
… looked forward to Christmas so I could go carolling from door to door with my neighborhood friends.
… was always fighting with my only sibling over petty things like the TV remote control or chores.
… was never neat, and always wore wrinkled and stained clothes and had lice in my long thick hair.
… collected X-Men playing cards .
… watched a lot of cartoons – Jem and the Holograms, Princess Sara, X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, etc.
… always had a hard time falling asleep and had to be rocked to sleep by my mom’s bisaya folk songs and old songs like Sad Movies and Paper Roses.
… loved going to the beach and swimming in the sea without sunblock, so my skin was very dark.
