Last Friday night, I found out that I needed to pick up my camera from Canon on Saturday, so since I was going all the way to Vivo City anyway, might as well make the most of my trip, right? A movie was definitely in order, and I had just the movie in mind – Gravity. So I decided to watch that in a Gold Class Cinema.
I remembered this email that I had received during the week:
First, let me explain about Gold Class. This is how they describe it in their website:
A cluster of 6 Gold Class Cinemas – the ultimate in luxury movie viewing with a private lounge and plush electronic recliner seats comparable to First Class airline seats.
GV VivoCity sets a new benchmark for multiplexes in Singapore by introducing a sophisticated club ambience, with a 5-star food and beverage menu available (including a top wine list) and a private dining room.
The Gold Class cinema seats are all equipped with call buttons for faster and more discreet service. A new level of concierge-style service, hitherto unseen in Singapore cinemas, will be enjoyed by patrons from the moment they arrive all the way through their patronage experience.
Sounds wonderful, right? It had always been my dream to watch in a luxury cinema, even before I moved to Singapore when I heard that they had opened one in Gateway Mall in the Philippines.
But I had always held back because it was too expensive and I just couldn’t justify spending four times the normal cost of a movie ticket, and even if I could, well, no one else did, and I didn’t want to go by myself.
But last Friday, I decided that I really want to experience it even once, JUST ONCE! And this free brunch, well, it made the cost a bit more justifiable, didn’t it?? So I clicked the book button.
Yes, I went to the cinema by myself. This actually isn’t the first time, I’ve done it one or two times before.
I remember that time I watched Oceans Thirteen. For some reason I wasn’t able to watch it until everyone already had and I couldn’t find anybody to watch it with.
Some people would probably just go, “Nah, didn’t really need to watch that anyway!” or maybe just get a DVD, but hello, this is me we’re talking about. So I booked a ticket on a weekend.
I was seated between two couples (#awkward?). That movie was so hilarious that at one point, I laughed so hard and said – “Oh gosh! That was so funny, wasn’t it?” – to the guy on my right before realizing that he was a complete stranger. 😅
But this isn’t even my most embarrassing blooper in a cinema, there was that time I accidentally sipped the drink of the stranger on my right because I thought it was my drink. 😓
But I digress.
On Saturday, after I picked up my camera, I headed to Golden Village in Vivo City to collect my ticket and have my brunch in the Gold Class lounge. What a pretty-looking lounge it was!
A waiter appeared at my table to ask if I wanted to take my breakfast there or at the cinema. I don’t like the idea of fumbling in the dark with my food, so I said I’ll eat it in the lounge. He asked if I wanted tea or coffee and I chose the latter. After a while, he served me this scrumptious looking meal. 😋
This dish was a delight for the tastebuds! I loved how creamy the scrambled eggs were and the croissant was such fluffy buttery goodness. Of course since I’m such a weirdo I can’t ever enjoy meat without ketchup, so I asked if they had some, and they did! So I was able to enjoy my sausages too.
I didn’t like the coffee because it was too strong and bitter, so I decided to order a mocha and asked for it to be delivered to my seat in the cinema because it has also always been my dream to sip a hot drink while watching a movie.
Normally they don’t sell those in cinemas and you’re not allowed to bring in outside food. I ordered it from this menu they had:
The movie was scheduled to start at 11 am, so I headed that way around 5 minutes before so I could take pictures, obviously! Here is my seat:
Here is the cinema screen view from behind my seat:
Here are my movie buddies. See how comfy they look with the lazy boy chairs reclined and with their feet up? So relaxing, that when I first did it, I was afraid I would fall asleep. 😴
Here is a selfie (please excuse my disheveled appearance) that I took using my handy dandy handheld monopod. When I used it, some people from the other aisle saw me and approached to ask where I bought it. Here is the info you need. You’re welcome.
A waitress delivered my mocha to me and I loved sipping it while swathed in a thick blanket. I could get used to this! 😍
Then one of the waitresses politely informed me that I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of the movie screen (this was the trailer for Hunger Games 2, I am the weirdo whose tears well up each time this comes up), so this was my last photo, which is fine, so I could sit lie back and enjoy the trailers and the movie.
Gravity (Movie Review)
Gravity, directed by Oscar (R) nominee Alfonso Cuaron, stars Oscar (R) winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone.

THE MOVIE WAS BRILLIANT! 👍
I kept my expectations in check because even though it was getting rave reviews from critics, a friend mentioned that while it was okay, it wasn’t all that.
Now I don’t know if it was the effect of being in a lazyboy chair under a blanket, but the movie really blew me away and I was the idiot who cried through most of it. I was really glad I had the blanket to hide under and use to mop up my tears. 😭
I was also glad for the space between me and my seatmate so I didn’t feel ashamed about my sobbing. Why was I sobbing, I just felt what Sandra was feeling, either she is a very good actress or I’m way too empathetic for my own good. 😅
There were moments when they showed the movie from inside her helmet, so you could see what she was seeing, before they shifted views to show her from outside so you could see her facial expression. Ingenious.
George Clooney was great as well, I loved his character’s witty wisecracking personality which served as a foil to Sandra’s serious one. I can’t believe that there were only two actors throughout the whole movie (that one extra didn’t really count because he hardly said anything and he was there for such a short time)!
There are a few twists as well, and though they’re not super twisty (say what?), they worked well. I liked the simple plot about survival and it made me think, how would I react if confronted with a situation where I am about to die? And all alone, out in space?
The special effects were out of this world (see what I did there?). It was realistic and really felt like you were out floating in space. 🚀
I really loved this movie and if you haven’t yet, go see it, better in 3D, I’ve heard. And if you already have, lemme know what you thought of it! Did you cry too or was I the only one? Must be hormones. Or the blanket. Definitely the blanket. 😅

This theatre looks absolutely incredible. OMG. I work at a movie theatre in the south (in the US) and it is NOTHING like this! I wish it was because I would take advantage of my free movies ALL the time.

Holy moly, I want to see a movie in a theater like that! Part of why I don't like going to the movies is the uncomfortable seats. This looks awesome!

WOW! What a theater!! I have heard of those kinds of luxury theaters before.. but I've never seen pictures! What a cool experience. I would actually go and see a scary movie at a place like that so that I could use the blanket to hide behind! 🙂

Haha yes, that would be an excellent use for the blanket indeed! Good thinking!

That’s a skillful answer to a diffciult question
