This month’s Reader’s Digest edition announced the winners of a 100-word story contest. My favorite was a runner up, not the winner. Here it is:

There it was, a clear glass bottle with a tarnished piece of folded paper inside. She picked it up and shook it but the paper remained curled up and unreadable. What did it say?   4. 100 words huh? That's a tall order – I don't know if I can be that succinct. I like yours though.

  5. Though pretty, Amanda was fat. Husband Keith cheated on her and blamed her rolls. The more he teased her, the more she ate until one day she found herself as fat as a cow. In utter misery Amanda joined the gym and slogged on the treadmill under the guidance of Jaimie the training instructor.
    On Valentine’s day, Keith went all out. He bought a ring and twelve red roses and said he would renew his vows. Amanda smiled and said excuse me I will go to the bathroom now. She stepped outside, onto Jamie’s red motorbike. She never came back.

  6. Cousin Simon had a habit of wife beating. Always stoned, he boasted he was smarter than the cops and too good for his wife. Last Friday he came home drunk and set upon her. Tired of the abuse, she stabbed him in rage. Cousin staggered to the police to report the matter. A cop went with him to arrest the wife. She brought out his twist of dagga and showed it to the cop. “Where did you get this?” the cop asked? “In my gaarrrden, I have some lushth bushes” stoned cousin slurred. He got jail time and instant divorce.
