Having hurdled the Nursing board exam, my brother has his eyes set on every Filipino nurse’s dream: to work abroad. But before he can do this he has to take and pass additional exams and therefore needs big-sister-in-the-city’s help in buying reviewers.
So off to Recto I go with housemates Maya and Gay in tow. After touring the entire length of Recto comparing prices in different stalls, I make my purchases. The reviewer was huge and heavy, as heavy as the amount it costs. Oh boy.
Being back in the Manila area brought back streams of nostalgic memories of the good old CPA board exam review days, and we decided to take a longer trip down memory lane by visiting our old dorm ICLH (Immaculate Conception Ladies Dorm) and review school CPAR.
Afterwards we were supposed to have dinner at Mayricks, this bar that serves the best buttered chicken. But it was still early and the cucinero was nowhere to be found. We opted for Goldilocks, our most frequented fast food during those days.
On the way over who do we ran into but Analyn, our freshman classmate who was had just taken the exam. Yesterday was their last day of exam, and the longest day of their life, because the results would be out today. Having been there we could imagine the apprehension they must be going through. We had dinner with her, had a little chit-chat, and escorted her to ICLH.
Moving onwards, we ran into another group of Atenean CPA-wannabe’s. Fern, one of my friends, squeezed my hand tightly, obviously nervous. Rino (our classmate Roni’s brother), Chaffee and Nadine were also in the group. After giving them an “even if you don’t pass it’s not the end of the world” speech we moved on.
Just as we were about to hail a taxi, we spotted Frank, yet another batchmate, so we stopped to chat. We decided to come back the next day to hang out with them when the results come out.
Afterwards we headed to IO Videoke in Jupiter, Makati. It just so happens that I was with a couple of singers who normally fill the house with their voices. We have been planning a housemates videoke trip for the longest time now and it has never materialized, so they decided once and for all to let it push through, whether or not we were complete.
Whaddya know, we didn’t need everyone else to have a blast! With a room all to ourselves and a microphone each (three mikes to a room), we found it hard to leave. We finally had to drag ourselves out of there at past midnight because we still had work the next day.

Videoke used to be something I thought was a “jologs” pastime, but I changed my mind once I discovered VIP rooms first in Davao, then later on here in Manila.
In fact last October 7 I had a blast in IO with my office berks. There were more of us then, too. And I had loads of fun belting and dancing my “smooth as alon ng dagat” moves (as they call it). Till next videoke session, then!
