I must be going back to my old self, the old “laagan” and “never at home” me, I mean. For the third night in a row, I get home way past my bedtime (FYI, I sleep at midnight).
Last night, though, was no longer a high school reunion, but somewhat the opposite, because it was an acquaintance party. In our company we have sort of orgs for TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday) occasions. I signed up to join the scuba divers, book lovers and the arts & culture society. It was Yen who signed us up for the performers & musicians guild (PMG) even though I am no performer, because she knew the president and he said they would teach us to play the guitar and stuff.
Last night was PMG’s acquaintance party and so Yen and I rode a taxi to Nobel Plaza Condos, where it was to be held. We were early birds, the rest of the gang opting to be fashionably late. There was pizza, barbeque, Pepsi and free-flowing beer. We had some while chatting with the voice coach on the couch.
Finally the program begun, with the president making a speech then asking each one to introduce himself, after which, he forced us all to perform onstage. Yen was firm with her no, so I thought I was gonna be safe too, since the pres doesn’t know me. Or so I thought. Turns out he remembers that I am part of the Christmas choir and asks me to render a piece.
The organizers pushed a book of 1001 songs into my hands so I riffled through the pages, trying to find a lowkey song that an alto voice like mine can handle. Finally I settled on one of my faves, Freestyle’s “Before I Let You Go.” Mark, the president, and another guy, played their guitars to accompany me. For once I felt like a singer of a real live band. Coolness! So maybe I didn’t hit the right notes, but it still felt cool.
Yen, Osma, Willah and Tog, all my departmentmates, also rendered their piece. It was fun to hang out with a small group of people, just jamming and having fun. It’s turning out that my accidental org is becoming my most enjoyable one. Tomorrow I’m having voice lessons, also c/o our org. Can’t wait!
