Cate worries that her eyes will get all puffy because she has been up all night crying from reading the book New Moon. I did not cry from that book. But I got Bella’s hole in the chest so I had to stop reading it; the pain was too much for me. I eventually got the courage to continue last week and finished it last night.
Anyway, I told Cate there was a way to cry so as not to get puffy eyes. I learned this trick from a friend back in college, back when I was bursting into bucketfuls every other hour. It’s simple, really – just don’t touch your eyes. When you cry, your tendency is to wipe the tears away with a hanky, tissue, your hands, whatever. Next time, resist this tendency and just let the tears flow till they stop (eventually) and dry up on your cheeks. Then wash your face and you should have no worries about other people asking you why you’ve been crying. It is such a secret place – the land of tears.
“I was like a lost moon—my planet destroyed in some cataclysmic, disaster-movie scenario of desolation—that continued, nevertheless, to circle in a tight little orbit around the empty space left behind, ignoring the laws of gravity.” -New Moon
