I’ve been a fan of Shrek since I saw part 1 as a Christmas special on TV years ago, so I just had to watch the last part of the franchise on 3D. I think this is the first time I watched a 3D movie in Cathay cinema, and their 3D glasses are way cooler than GV’s. They look like ordinary sunglasses, not the typical huge uncomfortable goggles.
In this installment, Shrek is given an It’s a Wonderful Life twist. Shrek hates his life and longs for the days when he was a “real ogre” and everyone ran screaming from his path instead of making his house a daily tour bus stopover. He gets a chance to get it back for a day, but he is tricked by the wily Rumpelstiltskin into trading the day of his birth in exchange for it, so that in effect, he had never been born. As he walks through a world that’s a mess because he had never been around to rescue Fiona from the castle, he realizes that he had the perfect life but didn’t know it till it was taken away from him.
The 3D effects were great (unlike in Clash of the Titans), there were a lot of hilarious scenes especially involving Puss-no-longer-in-boots and Donkey (who is not a bloodhound, that’s why his name is not Dog), and there were some moments that had me teary-eyed too. It’s a great movie that left me happy in the end. I wouldn’t mind watching it again.
