Last Saturday, my friends May, Mico, Beulah, King and I watched Eternals, the latest MCU movie, at the Pacific Place cinema.
The movie was a very long 2 hours and 36 minutes. That’s the second longest MCU film to date, second only to Avengers: Endgame which clocked in 3 hours and 2 minutes.
But while Endgame earned that length, Eternals did not. I get why it was long; they had to introduce ten new characters through 7000 years after all, but not all of these characters were just compelling at all, and a lot of them had no chemistry, so I found myself forgetting their names and not caring about them at all.
It’s not like the Avengers movies who had spent time introducing most of the characters in their individual movies previously, so you knew who they were and were already invested in them.
I still found the movie to be entertaining some of the time, with funny scenes (the valet was my fave for these) and great cinematography, but an underwhelming plot with characters that lack charisma. We definitely enjoyed Shang-Chi – which we had also watched together months ago – a lot more, and Google tells us we were not alone in this.
By the way, we were happy with the cinema because the seats were steeply inclined such that you could still see the screen clearly even if there was s tall man in front of you, and there was so much leg room that if someone walked into the row, you didn’t even need to stand up.
These were observations we made while waiting for the credits to finish rolling and we could finally catch the end-of-credits scene which is typical of MCU films.
After we watched the movie, we walked down to Lockhart Road where we had a reservation at New Korean BBQ Restaurant. Dinner buffet was an affordable H$268 per person, and came with bottomless meat, side dishes, and dessert, but not drinks.
The food was delicious; I loved the taste of the marinated meat and my fave side dishes were the pickled cucumbers and garlic which tasted like adobo.
We were very full afterwards, so we walked back to the Admiralty MTR station instead of popping into the nearer Wan Chai station.
Then we decided to get some coffee because it was not yet that late, for a Saturday night. I looked up cafes which were still open and found Le Garcon Saigon which was open till midnight.
The only coffee they had was Vietnamese latte, but which was available iced or hot. I had it iced and it was so strong, we asked for extra condensed milk to make it more palatable.
The cafe was very pretty and cozy so we ended up staying til after 11pm, just chatting about all sorts of things including middle child syndrome, how Bea Alonzo is a better actress than Toni Gonzaga, and plotting when and where to hold our Christmas party.
Overall it was a fun night!
