Bed Talk

I was referring to literal bed stuff – you know, pillows, bed sheets, etc? Why, what did you think this post was going to be about??

My bed is without a doubt my most favorite spot in our flat. I moved a couple of months ago and got upgraded from a single to a queen size, and having all the extra space to roll around in is just awesome.

I got so giddy about it that I broke down and finally bought something I’ve always wanted since the first time I found out about its existence 5 years ago – a body pillow!

I found it in one of the sales kiosks at the center of the mall.

I had but one regret after buying it – that I hadn’t done so 5 years ago! It’s so soft and fluffy and I love cuddling up against it while sleeping. My roomie joked that I don’t need a boyfriend if I have this, LOL.

I also love to use it as a back rest when I’m using my laptop on my bed (like right now), so I don’t have to sit against the hard concrete wall.

I’m telling you, though, my bed has improved a lot in five years. Let’s take a walk down the memory lane.

My first flat didn’t come furnished with beds. So my flatmates and I bought single mattresses and laid them out on the floors of our bedrooms to sleep on because we were too thrifty to splurge on bed frames.

We had to sleep on the floor for a year. Well not an entire year, because a few months later, one of our neighbors in our building moved out and gave us their bed frame, which was really great, or so we thought. There were just a few problems with it.

First, it needed to be assembled and was missing some of its bed screws, so we had to improvise by using some wire to tie the bed’s body to the legs and headboard.

Second, it was just a queen size frame that didn’t come with a mattress and our mattresses were not the correct size. Instead of buying a mattress which would have cost us a hundred bucks or so, my roomie Cate and I improvised by putting our single-sized mattresses side by side horizontally on the bed frame then tucking the excess foam underneath the bed. It looked a bit funny but it worked fine… for a while.

Unfortunately the wires didn’t do a very good job of keeping the bed parts together and our bed kept on collapsing in the middle of the night as we slept till I was afraid to climb up on it. So I voted to throw the frame out. After a couple of weeks, we were back on the floor once more.

We were really excited when we moved and our new flat came furnished with real beds and we could finally sleep like normal people. Well, mine was actually a foldable one, but still, it had legs that didn’t break down in the middle of the night and all!

But the funny thing was, after a week in the flat, my flatmates’ bed frame collapsed and they had to go back to sleeping on the floor again. LOL! At that moment I seriously wondered if Cate had some kind of bed curse or something.

I have to say, though, that I didn’t really mind sleeping on the floor that much because our mattresses were thick and soft. My bed in my hometown did not even have a mattress and only had a thick blanket to cover its hard plywood body.

Then I moved to Makati, and my double bunk bed with the really thin mattress over the metal skeletal frame wasn’t that much of an improvement either.

One of the happiest moments of my life was when I was able to buy a comforter here – something I had wanted to do ever since I laid eyes on one and thought about how wonderful it must be to sleep on a bed with one of those.

Sometimes, dreams don’t remain in our heads while we’re sleeping. Sleeping Beauty can wake up to find Prince Charming gazing back at her.

So now that I have a comforter and a body pillow, next on my bed bucket list are silk bed linens, like these dreamy-looking ones from Urbanara:

I do hope I don’t take 5 years to decide to buy them this time around!

But what about you, do you have any bed stories to share? What is on your bed bucket list?
