First things first. What is a “meet cute?” This is how Wikipedia defines it:
I first encountered this term in the movie The Holiday and have been enamored by it ever since. The term usually refers to a scene in fiction, but sometimes it does happen in real life, too. Here are some of the cutest “how we met” real life stories I’ve come across, my Valentine’s present to you.
(1) She met her husband on the day of what was supposed to be her wedding.
My friend K’s love story is so unusual, it could very well be the plot of a novel or movie. Some years ago, she was engaged to be married to her long term boyfriend. Then 2 months before the wedding, after the invites had been sent out, the dress almost completely sewn, the pre-nup pictures taken and posted, her fiancée called it off.
She was devastated. Who wouldn’t be? She cried and lost weight and all the usual symptoms. But she decided to hold a party in lieu of the wedding reception on the day of her supposed wedding, since her friends had already booked tickets to her hometown and all.
She brought her friends to one of her city’s tourist spots, an island made of pink sand. To get there, they had to ride a ferry, where a man struck her up in a conversation and ended up asking for her number. She ended up marrying that guy, and today they have a lovely baby girl.
Love moves in mysterious ways, eh?
(2) On the Wings of Love.
She was my friend R’s first girlfriend. The first time he told me he finally had one, I asked if I knew the girl, to which he replied, “Hmm…. you might. I’m not sure.” So I thought she was someone from our same hometown. But he refused to tell me her name and insisted we meet the next day so he could tell me in person.
He went to my office, and we had dinner at a nearby restaurant. “So who is this girl??” I demanded. He handed me a picture of the two of them and my jaw dropped. “OMG. Don’t I know her?? Isn’t this – insert name of actress here???” He nodded his confirmation.
“How did you when did you why did you – ????” I spluttered in incredulity. He proceeded to tell me the story.
R was a flight steward. During one of his usual shifts, he noticed that one of the passengers was a s celebrity. So when he neared her, he struck her up in a friendly conversation. “If I’m not mistaken, Ma’am,” he said, “I think this is our second time to be in a flight together.”
“Fourth time, actually,” she corrected him. She had noticed her first! He asked for her email add so he could ask for an autograph for his mom and sister.
They met up later, on the ground, in a Starbucks cafe, where they ended up talking until dawn. Years later, they got married and now have a beautiful baby girl.
(3) She stole his food… then his heart.
Che of Indieberries is my favorite blogger who happens to have the most adorably funny story of how she met her husband Warren.
Back when they were both in college, Che got invited to a party at Warren’s house. She didn’t get much to eat, so late into the night, she got hungry and snuck into the kitchen to look for food. She spotted a half empty box of KFC chicken on the table and decided to make a beeline for it. Unfortunately, she was stopped in her tracks when Warren caught her red-handed.
He took pity on her, and decided to share the chicken with her. They ate it all, then had dessert – Warren’s concoction of ice cream and lemon juice. She thought it would be revolting, but it turned out to be surprisingly delicious. So when he asked her to dance, she agreed. (You can read the full story here.)
That was funny, but what was even funnier was the story of what happened next, when they happened to be at another party together again, and a drunk Warren asked for number… thrice. Seriously, you have got to read it. She illustrated the story with drawings. Totes hilarious.
Years later, they got married and had the best wedding food idea ever by giving their guests a taste of their love story. Which means there was KFC and ice cream with lemon juice. Go check that out, it’s really creative and fab!
(4) She attracted him into her life.
Jenni of Story of My Life is one of the most popular bloggers around, and I really love her love story.
Years ago, she was with a guy whom she knew deep in her heart would never be the right one for her. Then she read the book The Secret which is about the law of attraction. The book made her realize that she had to decide what she wanted her future to look like and take active steps towards attracting that future. And that meant that as painful as it was, she had to break up with him.
48 hours later, she met her future husband.
But there’s some back story here. For a couple of years, she had been waiting on her future in-laws without knowing it. They always brought up their son and how perfect he would be for her. But for some reason, she was never working when he stopped by, so their paths never crossed. Until that one fateful day. And the funny thing was, she wasn’t even working that day – the encounter was truly by chance.
I’ll let you read all about it in her own words here. I don’t think I can do it justice. But isn’t it crazy and slightly creepy how the universe threw him into his path the moment she decided she was ready? Mind blown.
(5) He fell for her… blog.
Wendy of Xiaxue is one of the most popular bloggers in Singapore, and she met her husband thanks to her blog. Does this qualify as a blate story?
He randomly stumbled across her blog while googling for something, and the moment he saw her photos, he told himself that he had to have her. So he wrote her a funny email and attached a photo of him. She thought he was cute and was suspicious that it wasn’t a real pic of him.
After a while, he decided to use up all his savings to buy a ticket to Singapore and meet up with her, where he asked her to be his girlfriend. She couldn’t believe it when he did because she had been single for 4 years before he came along. Everyone she dated had been commitment phobes. You can read the story in her own words here. They carried on a long distance relationship until he finally moved here and they got married. Now they have the most adorable baby boy.
(6) A Series of Fortunate Events
Belinda of Found Love, Now What is another blogger with a cute “how we met” story. In this post she called “The Randomness of Life and Love,” she says:
Have you ever given thought about how a single moment can completely change your entire life? And I mean a single everday decision, like which bus or elevator to catch, just like the plot point to a book or movie, and how it can shift your entire life? I have, quite a bit, as today marks one of those series of small decisions I made three years ago that lead me to meet Neal in a NYC bar.
Click on the link above to find out, in her own words, how a series of seemingly random events led her to meeting her husband. It seems like something Ted Mosby of How I Met Your Mother would say!
(7) She was 37 and thought she’d never get married.
She wanted to be a nurse, to go abroad. Her mother had different ideas and forced her to become an engineer. She was bad at Math but managed to pass the board exams. How, I don’t know. She eventually found a job in her hometown, but due to a reshuffling of items (or something to that effect), her position became redundant and she lost her job. She found out from an old friend that there was an open position but at a place far away. Faced with no choice, she packed up and transferred.
Six months later, her boss asked her to attend a seminar. She didn’t want to go, but her boss told her: “Go! Who knows, you might meet your future husband there!” So she went. And met a chap 10 years her junior with a good sense of humor. She thought he was too good looking and too young to be interested in her. He liked older women and found her incessant chatter to be charming. They got married three months later. She was 37 years old then.
“If I had become a nurse and gone abroad, or if I hadn’t lost my job and stayed in my hometown, then I wouldn’t have met your father,” she always tells me and my brother. “Then I wouldn’t have had you.” Yes, this is the story of how my mother met my father.
I’ve heard the story so many times that I’ve become immune to it but my friends tell me: “Wow that’s so inspiring! It gives me hope!” And I realize that I always turn to romance novels and movies and other people’s stories for inspiration, not realizing that the only inspiration I need is right under my nose. Right inside me, actually. The fact that I exist.
Someday I’ll meet the guy who will make me see how all the different pieces of my life fall into place. The one who will make me feel like I’m reading Harry Potter book 7, the one who will make me go, “Oh that’s why that happened!”
So the moral of my mom’s story? (1) Age or looks don’t matter. Nor do any other traits. (2) Catastrophes can be blessings in disguise. And most importantly – (3) GO. Just go. Who knows, you might meet your future husband there. {Originally published here.}
