Recently I had some unpleasant news. As I cried about it to my friends, one of them said something profound.
“Maybe, just maybe, this pushes you to get out of the situation,” she said. “Like me, I cried several times, because of my job, and that was what pushed me to finally quit it to pursue what I really want. Maybe it’s the same for you, maybe this had to happen so you can start taking action towards your dream.”
“She’s right,” another friend chimed in. “Maybe if what you want to happen had happened, then you won’t go for your dreams.”
I realised that they were right, of course. And I remembered something that I had learned back in school:
Pain is nature’s unpleasant but crucial way of warning you of danger. It stops you repeating any action that causes pain. Touching something painful activates an immediate withdrawal reflex.
Some people are born with an absence of pain – a very dangerous condition because they do not realise when they have hurt themselves. {source}
I know that is talking about physical pain, but isn’t the same true of emotional ones as well? If we never get hurt, what would make us realise that changes need to be done, that it’s time to move on?
Then I looked back on my life and saw an abundance of examples. Moving cities or countries, switching jobs or homes, ending relationships… all of the decisions that ultimately led to me having a better life were triggered by pain.
Pain was the unpleasant but crucial symptom that warned me of danger, that made me want to stop repeating my actions, that activated an immediate withdrawal reflex.
Pain was my saviour.

No question about it–pain is not fun. But it does usually steer us to go in another direction, and sometimes that's just the push we need. Hope it all works out for you.

Best,

Deb@ http://debioneille.blogspot.com
