Last Sunday I had a fab lunch with my friends Yves and Arlyn at the newly opened Fabulous Baker Boy bakery cafe on the foothills of Fort Canning Park. You can get there by taking the MRT to Clarke Quay then walking towards Liang Court. It’s across the street.
We had made the rather silly mistake of not making a reservation, so when we got there at around 12, we were told it was full and we had to wait for 45 minutes.
So Yves gave her phone number and we walked around the picturesque surroundings while waiting.
There were three swing sets on the green in front of the place, but they were occupied with kids, too bad. We would have loved to try them.
They called us when a table was ready, and we were ushered to teeny tiny square of a table for two. I really wasn’t sure how all our orders would fit, so we just quickly finished each dish as soon as it got served so that we could have it plated off and have room for the next one.
The place is rather lovely, with huge glass walls that let in a lot of light, and quaint decors like flowers on the table, clear glass jars with stoppers, and recipes written on the wall.
Here is their brunch menu:
We decided to order for sharing, and here’s what we had:
GARLIC FRIES ($9.50)
We ordered these when we saw that they were cooked in truffle oil, and also because we love garlic. The garlic overpowers the truffle, though. Still, it’s yummy, and comes in a gigantic serving, so it’s definitely for sharing.
3 CHEESES PANCAKES ($12)
These are pancakes with three kinds of cheese – cheddar, mozarella and parmesan. To be honest this was quite disappointing. I expected the cheeses to be more obvious, like the chunks in
Ihop’s new york cheesecake pancakes. Instead they’re just little grated, barely there hints that you can easily miss unless you know that you’re specifically watching out for them. I guess this was my fault for having lofty expectations, eh?
TFBB CHAMPION BREAKFAST ($24)
The dish consists of 2 poached eggs served on toasted brioche, roasted rosemary potatoes, garlicky mushrooms, chicken chipolata or rosemary lamb sausage or chicken & beef cabanossi and a side of beef bacon. This dish is quite expensive for just one plate, so I’m glad we shared it. It was delicious.
FLAT WHITE ($5.40)
I was the only one who had coffee. The flat white has become my coffee of choice recently. It’s like cappuccino but with a silkier texture, due to something called a micro foam. I love it and always go for it when I see it on the menu, which is not always, which is also probably why I like it even more.
VELVET CAKE ($9)
TFFB is actually famous for their cakes. Yves said that she was not a fan of velvet cakes AT ALL until she tasted this. Then she was hooked.
Arlyn and I decided that we definitely need to try this. I asked the waitress about which of their cakes was the bestseller and she confirmed that it was the velvet cake, but there are two kinds – either topped with cream cheese or chocolate. We decided to go for the classic kind, the cheese one. It was really delicious indeed – moist, with several layers of cream cheese in between, and just the right amount of sweetness. I wouldn’t mind coming back just for their cake.
They have many other cakes on the counter (see the first picture on this post) and several more in a fridge. It can be really confusing to choose, I tell you. I was also tempted to try this lovely looking merengue tart. Oh well, maybe next time.
There was this funny moment when we thought that one of our servers was The Fabulous Baker Boy himself, and even asked him so. He said he was just the coffee man. Oops.
We did see the real baker himself later on, though. 😛
P.S. In case you’re planning to go there for dinner, here’s the menu for that:
