My interest first got sparked when I watched my officemates play ultimate frisbee during our company sportsfest last summer. It seemed fun, and since I knew that two of my housemates were into the sport, I decided to give it a shot too.
So a couple of weeks ago, Reggie brought me to his game. His girlfriend Diane also came with us, and we met up in Ayala before heading to the playing field in Urdaneta Village.
We spent the first hour warming up by jogging around the field, and then throwing the disc at each other. Regg taught me how to do the “pancake” catch as well as how to throw the disc (something I have a feeling I’ll never master).
After awhile we broke off into two teams – the darks and the lights (based on the shirts we wore).
Now for most uninformed people, when the word “frisbee” is mentioned to them, think that it is a lame game best played with a dog. But then again, most uninformed people don’t know about Ultimate.
Ultimate (commonly called Ultimate Frisbee) is a non-contact competitive team sport played with a flying disc. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end-zone, similar to an end-zone in American football. It involves a lot of running and catching and jumping and stretching and bumping and falling over. It involves a lot of sweat and dirt and a whole lot of fun.
I spent my first session just running around. No one on my team trusted a newbie enough to throw her the disc and expect her to catch it. I did not trust myself either, so I did not make eye contact with anyone who had the disc. But the running around was good enough for me, since exercise was my primary reason for doing this, and this was definitely the best exercise I’ve had in years.
But my second session last Saturday was more fruitful. I got hit by frisbee on my arm and almost got hit on my face and I fell down a couple of times and got dirt all over my shorts and itchy grass all over my legs but it was all worth it when I scored my first goal. Whoopee for me!
Until now my body aches all over (and the spot where Reggie’s frisbee hit my arm is a bit swollen), but that’s definitely not gonna stop me from playing again this Saturday…and hopefully, scoring another goal.
Whoever called it “ultimate” for being an ultimate sport was right on the money.

Hi!

Just browsing to see if I can get info…I’ve been trying to find a team willing enough to teach newbies. I’ve played a couple of times, would like to play more often, but I seem to be running into dead ends when I follow-up leads as to how to do this.I know of Wednesday newbie nights in Meralco, but have no idea if they still do that.

Since you had such a positive
