I’m slightly late to the fan club but I love love LOVED Frozen! I actually had no plans to watch it at first (not sure why), but after I kept on reading rave reviews about it, I had to go watch, and I’m so glad I did!
It reminded me of my favorite Disney movie Tangled, because the funniest characters are the non-human ones. In Tangled it was the horse and the chameleon, in this one it’s the reindeer and the snowman.
Another similarity is the heroine who is, to put it in her voice actor’s words: “much more relatable and weirder and scrappier and more excitable and awkward.” Anna is definitely a lot like Rapunzel. They even kind of look the same.
Meanwhile, the other heroine, Elsa, is a feminist princess. She is no damsel in distress waiting haplessly for a prince to come and save her. She is independent, feisty, powerful and beautiful. And seriously, how awesome is her power?
Though this film is a love story, it is not focused on romance but on sisterly love, kind of like Brave, which was about family love too. It has romantic elements, too, though, and these parts were definitely cute to watch!
It is hilarious and heartwarming and the songs were so wonderful that Dred and I (who watched the movie separately) kept singing “Do you wanna build a snowman?” and “For the first time since forever” while discussing the movie tonight.
And oh yeah, one more thing – you know a movie is a good one if you want to talk about it afterwards! And more so if you want to watch it again, which my friends and I want to do!
And oh yeah, bring tissues unless you want your friend to laugh about the tear tracks in your makeup afterwards (which happened to me, yes).
When the gates open during “For The First Time in Forever,” there is a cameo of Rapunzel and Eugene (Flynn) from Tangled. Rapunzel has short, brown hair and is wearing a purple and pink dress, and Eugene is wearing a maroon vest and a brownish sash. They are entering the screen from the left.
A live reindeer was brought into the animating studio for animators to study its movements and mannerisms for the reindeer character, Sven. Co-director Jennifer Lee said it was the best moment during production for her.
And that’s it for the non-spoiler territory. If you wanna build a snowman – sorry I mean, if you wanna read on for trivia and my favorite parts, please do so only if you have already seen the movie or have not but don’t mind spoilers.
* When Anna keeps on asking her sister if she wants to build a snowman, it tugged at my heart. Poor girl reaching out for love, confused as to why her sister suddenly doesn’t want anything to do with her, when they used to be so close.
* When Anna starts singing about being excited that for the first time in forever, she won’t be alone, or that she could be noticed by someone, my heart broke for her again.
- I loved Anna’s duet with Hans! So cute. (Side note: Dred said that when she saw that scene, it reminded her of me and a certain guy because we’re apparently as spontaneous as that! Haha!)
* When Elsa is finally free, I feel liberated along with her. And how awesome was that transformation? The cold never bothered her anyway.
* Laughed too much at the scene when Kristoff can’t move on from the fact that Anna got engaged to someone she met that same night. And also when he talked for his reindeer Sven.
* Laughed when Olaf asks, who is that funky looking donkey over there? Anna replies, Sven. Then Olaf asks, and who is the reindeer?
* Laughed too much again when Olaf sang about summer and wanting to experience it, not realizing that it will mean his demise, while Kristoff goes: “Somebody has to tell him!”
* Cried when Olaf tells Anna: “Some people are worth melting for.”
Cried harder when a dying Anna runs to save Elsa instead of waiting for her true love’s kiss to save her.
