Happy Chinese New Year!
CNY is the biggest holiday in Singapore, so almost all the malls and establishments are closed today (the equivalent of Holy Week in the Philippines). Normal offices are closed too, but since our office caters to non-Singapore-based clients, we have to work. Most of our Chinese colleagues are on leave, though, so those of us who are not have a lot more to do. And it’s month end on top of that so basically, I’m probably gonna die today.
Okay… maybe it’s not great to start off a new year on such a bad note, eh? So scratch that… I’m sure I’m gonna have a great day!!!!!
Superstition states that you should get a haircut before CNY, so as to leave your bad luck from the previous year behind (I think), so we did just that last Saturday, you know, just in case. Superstition also states that you should wear new clothes from head to toe, but I wasn’t able to buy any new clothes, unfortunately. I did find this cute pair of earrings, which, according to the saleslady, means “double happiness.” I hope this will suffice?
Another superstition was fulfilled by our office when they handed each employee 2 mandarins and an ang pao (red envelope) with money inside for prosperity. Some people say that you’re not supposed to spend the money but rather, keep it for good luck until the next CNY. I invented my own superstition wherein I write a wish and stick it in the envelope. Last year, it actually came true! SO DO IT, I SAY!
Meanwhile, these cookies were given to us by our flat agent. I’m not sure if they’re supposed to be lucky as well or what. One thing I know, though, is that they’re delicious. And I love the reusable Tupperware containers they came in with!
Do you celebrate Chinese New Year? What are your beliefs?
