VERDICT
I love dystopian fantasies with a hint of mystery, so it really shouldn’t be a surprise that I liked this film.
It’s no Hunger Games or Divergent and lacks any romantic scene even though there’s a girl in the story. But I liked the thrilling action sequences, the mystery, and Thomas’s budding bromance with his newfound friends.
This is one instance when I enjoyed the movie more than the book. I don’t know why, but when I tried to read it before, I just couldn’t get invested in it and ended up abandoning it mid-read. But the movie’s mysterious cliffhanger of an ending made me want to go find the book again and finish reading it and its sequels (it’s a trilogy… not that this should be a surprise since this is the trend nowadays) so I can find out what happens next.
It was also a treat to see the little boy from Love Actually all grown up now. Another treat was the eye candy in the form of the Asian dude who looked familiar because it turns out he acted for some popular Youtube videos for Wong Fu Productions.
