Of Love, Loss, and Iphones

Recently I was talking to a friend of mine about a boy. Isn’t it almost always about a boy? Or should I say, at our age, about a man?

“I’m hoping that I’ll be okay by his wedding,” she sighed, as I imagined Adele crooning “Never mind I’ll find someone like you” in the background.

“Of course you will be,” I replied. “Time heals all wounds.”

“What if’s are more painful, aren’t they?” she suggested. “Because you didn’t even have the chance to show how much you love him.”

“Hmmm… I think it’s more painful if you really became a couple,” I begged to differ.

“Oh really?” she said.

“Well it’s like, for example, an iphone,” I explained.

“Imagine you owned an iphone that got stolen. Isn’t that more painful than, say, if you had raffle tickets with an iphone as the grand prize and you didn’t win?

“It’s because with the raffle ticket, you only bought the possibility of winning an iphone, but it didn’t really belong to you yet. Yes, sure, it still hurts because you hoped to win it, but it’s more painful if you already owned the iphone and suddenly someone stole it.”

“Oh wow, what a nice example,” my friend commented.

“Yeah, I already thought about this before,” I admitted with a laugh.

“But you know, this iphone grand prize is the one you really want,” she continued. “They actually asked you to test it and you really loved it because it serves all your needs. But you didn’t win it.”

“Yeah, that’s why it hurts,” I agreed. “But… someday, you will find an iphone 7. And it will be a lot better than the iphone 6 which you thought was already perfect. And it will be given to you for free, even if you don’t buy a raffle ticket for it. And when it comes, you’ll forget you ever liked iphone 6.”

I have no doubt that she will find her iphone 7, and soon, just as she least expects it.

P.S. I do want the real iphone 6 though. It’s so pretty!
