We had some vouchers to Cake Love after the Cafe Fest disaster, so we decided to go there last Saturday to celebrate Armar’s good news. We were pleased to find that the place was very cute and pretty.
They had these props which you can use for pictorials |
They even have their own hashtag |
Love the look of those bar stools which look like soda bottle crowns |
This movie theatre marquee was at the entrance |
Now onto the food. I remember having tried their churros with caramel dip at the Cafe Fest and it tasted pretty decent.
Here is their menu:
Here is their pastry counter:
It was tough to decide what to order because they all look tempting, but we finally decided on the chocolate tart and I remember reading somewhere that they had good red velvet macarons, so I added one of those. Then we ordered rock fries and drinks as well.
CHOCOLATE-HAZELNUT MILKSHAKE ($7.50) |
The drinks were really good. I really loved my shake and sipped it happily as I praised the aesthetics of the cafe. We were all pretty happy at this point. It all went quickly downhill from there.
After a while, we were served a burger, much to our confusion. “No, we didn’t order a burger,” we said. Then we looked at our receipt, which we probably should have done earlier, and we saw that they had punched in “rock-afella burger” instead of “rock my fries.” Fine, this was probably a mistake caused by the word “rock” and it was probably our fault for not checking our receipt earlier, so we shrugged and took the burger, even though Armar does not eat beef. Arlyn and I split it.
ROCK-AFELLA BURGER ($12.90) Juicy beef patty, cheddar cheese, pineapple, lettuce, tomato in between homemade burger sauce, sunny side egg and steak fries |
We both didn’t like the burger and almost couldn’t finish it even though there was just the one burger for the two of us. Why? The meat has a weird taste. It’s not completely terrible, I mean you can still eat it and not gag, but it’s a bit dry and strangely spicy. It’s the complete opposite of the MU Parlour burger which we really loved and managed to finish two of despite its gigantic size.
Red Velvet Macaron |
The macaron was okay, I suppose. Not as delicious as I had hoped, though. Okay actually it was downright disappointing. I’ve had better macarons definitely.
We then wondered why it took forever to serve the chocolate tart when they were just supposed to cut it, and we took another look at our receipt and realised that they had never punched it despite me pointing at the tart maybe five times and asking if they had included it. What in the hell???
So I marched to the counter, ordered the tart, and was even more miffed when they asked if I had smaller change for my $50. I said no. I was just really annoyed at this point. I know it wasn’t supposed to be a big deal but after all they had put us through, I just lost my patience. So after I took my change, I flounced off back to my table and didn’t wait for the cake. It was their job to serve it to us after all, right?
Chocolate Tart |
Minutes later, the waitress showed up with the cake and laid it down on our table with a thud, like a girlfriend who was mad at her boyfriend. And she sported the facial expression of what can only be described as rhymes-with-witch. It seems like she was mad at me for not taking the cake myself. What. The. Hell. What kind of customer service is that? She ruined our entire stay. Armar and I were so pissed off with her that we grumbled through eating the cake (which tasted just okay, by the way) and just couldn’t wait to finish our food and hightail it out of there as fast as we could.
So even though the place looked pretty and the so-so food could have been tolerable, the horrible customer service left a really sour taste in my mouth, so I am never going back. EVER. That was probably the worst customer service I have ever gotten in Singapore, and I have been to a lot of cafes and restaurants here. I do NOT recommend going to this place, there are a lot of better cafes/restaurants out there, like MU Parlour, Professor Brawn Cafe, or Folks Collective, the last one which I just went back to last night, actually, because unlike this horrible place, it has the entire trinity of restaurants down pat – good appearance, food, AND customer service.
This reminds of a time my friend got yelled at by a waiter at another restaurant. She was so horrified, she boycotted the place. Now it’s closed, probably because of karma, or probably because customers don’t go back to places with horrible service. Learn a lesson from that, restaurant owners. Teach your employees some manners.
