I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it here before, but my most favorite book of all time is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It looks like a children’s book, but it’s actually rife with meaning about love, life, and human nature.
So when I watched the video of its movie trailer this week, you can’t imagine how ridiculously happy and emotional I became. You can see it below, too.
I will obviously be first in line to watch this movie once it opens in Singapore, whenever that may be.
Since we’re talking about The Little Prince, let me share some of my favorite quotes from the book.
And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world.
One runs the risk of crying a bit if one allows oneself to be tamed.
People have forgotten this truth. But you mustn’t forget it. You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed.
You’re beautiful, but you’re empty. One couldn’t die for you. Of course, an ordinary passerby would think my rose looked just like you. But my rose, all on her own, is more important than all of you together, since she’s the one I’ve watered. Since she’s the one I put under glass, since she’s the one I sheltered behind the screen. Since she’s the one for whom I killed the caterpillars (except the two or three butterflies). Since she’s the one I listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. Since she’s my rose.
It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.
If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night. All the stars are a-bloom with flowers.
You – you alone will have the stars as no one else has them. In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night. You – only you – will have stars that can laugh.
What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.
Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship.
It is such a secret place, the land of tears.
Words are the source of misunderstandings.
I must endure the presence of a few caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies.
One loves the sunset when one is so sad.
Sometimes I miss my childhood innocence. Sometimes it sucks to be a jaded adult.
Have you read The Little Prince? Do you like it as much as I do?

I first read Le Petit Prince in French when I was in college. Then I read the English version which I’ve reread a few times since. It is really a beautiful poignant book.

I’ve never read this book, but I’ve heard so much about it. One day I’m sure I’ll pick it up and read it.. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂
