Every first Saturday of the month, the Orchard Road is closed off to vehicles so that people can walk on the road.
Known as Pedestrian Night on Orchard Road, this initiative aims to inject street vibrancy into the precinct by creating a community space with accessible lifestyle experiences for all to enjoy.
At each Pedestrian Night, the stretch between Scotts Road and Bideford Road will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 pm – 11pm, allowing visitors to experience an array of bustling activities across the entire space on the iconic shopping boulevard.
The pilot Pedestrian Night has been successful in garnering public interest and enhancing Orchard Road’s street vibrancy and will be extended from July – December 2015. For the extension, the buzz will extend beyond the street and visitors can look forward to different themes, in-mall activities, special promotions and contests.
This month’s theme was Orchard Road flash sales, so this included a lot of flash sales in the malls along Orchard Road, as well as activities within those malls. Tangs even extended their shopping hours and had additional discounts on their goods, which I enjoyed on this American Tourister ultra light spinner luggage! So happy! 😛
They also had a special program for A-listers inside the store, where they served cocktails and there was a free shoe shining service for men and jewel non-permanent tattoos for ladies. Jia Hui and I got one of the latter. Mine looked like a Louis Vuitton bracelet and I got a lot of compliments on it. It lasted for about a week.
Visitors can also participate in monthly photo contests on Instagram/Facebook and stand a chance to win attractive prizes! This month, they had one for HAG, and even though we did not win the contest, we did get free photos, which is still a win, in my book!
They always have performers, too, and this month, a band called Flame of the Forest released their debut album.
This isn’t my first time to join the pedestrian night. Last December, my friends and I were very happy to pose with the Christmas decors.
So now I’m excited to do it again this December coz yes, they are doing the Christmas theme again! I can’t wait to see what they come up with this time.
I am also excited to see all the other themes! Here is the list of themes for the rest of the year.
