My friend Arlyn is in Manila for a business trip. The night before her flight, she, her brother Armar and I decided to go out for dinner and ended up at Munch Saladsmith & Rotisserie in Paya Lebar Square, because I had entertainer app vouchers for their salads.
We thought the salads were a tad too healthy and tasteless, but I did love the roast chicken. While I was taking a photo of our food, I knocked over my glass of iced tea and spilled it all over the table and floor. 😓 It wasn’t a huge waste, though, because it tasted a bit weird, like it had prune juice in it or something.
Since we were unhappy with the food, we looked for another place to get something else and ended up at Toast Box. While we were comparing the quality of life index of a couple of countries on my phone, Arlyn knocked over her glass of iced milo and spilled it all over the table and the floor. 😓
“What is going on with all the spilling tonight?” I wondered. “We’ve eaten together so many times before and this is the first time we’ve ever spilled anything. Is this is an omen?”
We quickly went home before Armar could spill anything else.
“Continuation of the spilled drinks saga: lost boarding pass,” Armar reported the next day.
“OMG. What happened?” I asked.
“She was on standby at first because the flight was overbooked,” he narrated. “But they still issued her a boarding pass without a seat number. Then when she got to the boarding gate, the boarding pass was missing! And it was only 25 minutes before the flight. So she had to go to the transfer desk for the boarding pass to be reissued. Talk about #panic.”
“Good job, right?” Arlyn remarked. “Anyway, I’ve arrived in Shangri-la. In fairness, they have good service.”
Then she sent pictures of the Makati Shangri-la Hotel.
“Oh wow, that looks so pretty!” I enthused. “Especially the lobby!”
“Tim Yap is there,” Armar pointed out. “You should stalk him.”
“The driver told me earlier that Fernando Jose is checked in here,” Arlyn responded. “It’s the guy from Marimar before. I should target him.”
“There you go, he speaks Spanish!” Armar said excitedly. “Just murmur something in Spanish while you’re walking near his room.”
“How on earth will I find his room?” Arlyn wondered.
“Ask the reception,” Armar suggested. “Pretend that you’re from Spanish media.”
😂😂😂
“Ask him, ¿Donde es cuarto del Fernando Jose? Mi interesado.”
“Tell him you’re interviewing him for a website,” I jumped in.
“Yes yes!” Armar agreed. “Just continue speaking in Spanish.”
“With me looking like this,” Arlyn laughed. “Not Spanish-looking at all.”
“How about you dress up like Marimar?” was my next brilliant idea.
“Find a stray dog and say it’s your dog Fulgoso,” I explained.
“Yes, like that!” Armar agreed. “Looking like a beggar! Rip up your dress’s hem at the bottom.”
“Go barefoot,” I added.
“And wipe coal on your knee,” Armar finished.
“OMG,” said Arlyn.
“Oops, guys, we were mistaken, he’s from Rosalinda and not Marimar,” I realised. “So you should wear a rose behind your ear instead.”
“Quick, find him on Instagram!” I encouraged.
Armar was quick to send this screenshot.
“Spam his Instagram with your comments, indicating your room number,” Armar proposed.
“Post an Instagram picture of you in the same location,” I added.
“Yes, post a picture of you reading a Spanish book,” Armar said, “while eating a Mexican dish, and biting a chilli.”
😂😂😂
“The caption should be,” I said, “‘In Manila with my beloved Mexican always in my heart.'”
“Then hashtag #soloinroom123,” Armar added.
“Also he likes to hashtag #GOD, so do that too!”
“Oh my God,” Arlyn reacted.
“Thank #GOD I arrived in Shangri-la hotel even though I spilled Milo and lost my boarding pass.”
“Even if I am alone here in room 123, I still feel blessed because #GOD is good”
“With a seductive pose.”
“Ok guys, I will try…” Arlyn replied, “…NOT to do everything that you suggested.”
😂😂😂
I hope she at least gets to see him over breakfast or something!
