My friend Arlyn was craving for lava cake, so we decided to meet up at To-gather Cafe last Sunday. However when I got off the bus stop near it, I realized that it was near the famous Bedok 85 Hawker Centre that my local teammates have mentioned a few times, so I suggested eating dinner at the food centre and just have dessert at the cafe, like we used to do when Armar was still in Singapore.
Bedok 85 Hawker Centre
I asked my teammates for suggestions on what to eat.
Fengshan Satay Bee Hoon, #01-41
I had never tried satay bee hoon before, so I decided to look for that. It was pretty easy to spot – it had a long queue in front of it. It takes a while to prepare because the cook makes each order separately instead of cooking everything in one big batch. This ensures the quality of the dish. I ended up queueing for more than 30 minutes! 😅
After the meat and bee hoon and veggies are cooked, satay sauce is dumped all over them, so it doesn’t really look photogenic, but it does taste really good!
The meat was cooked very nicely. Yan Ming says this stall is the only one that can cook liver perfectly. He doesn’t normally like liver and I don’t normally like satay sauce, yet we somehow both like this dish, which is saying something. Also it’s really cheap – just $4 for this plateful.
Sin Bedok North BBQ Chicken Wing, #01-02
While I was in the queue, I got Arlyn to order bbq chicken wings.
We were both surprised at how long it took for the wings to get delivered to our table, but it was worth the wait. It’s really yummy!
Bedok 85 Fried Oyster Omelette, #01-09/10
Arlyn ordered the fried oyster while waiting for the bbq chicken wings.I thought this tasted good but nothing extraordinary. Turns out we had ordered the wrong thing. Apparently the popular one is supposed to be completely slathered in chili and is more expensive.
To-gather Cafe
After dinner, we walked over to the next block to find To-gather Cafe and have our dessert.
We found a nice cozy cafe with lots of empty tables, just perfect for chilling.
We ordered a chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream for sharing.
Arlyn had a Southern Comfort iced tea in lychee flavour while I was recommended to try their new island sparkle – passionfruit and soursop puree with red tea jello in soda. It was an uncommon drink and I really liked it – especially the red tea jelly.
The cashier asked me if I wanted to sign up for their club membership for $1 and get Arlyn’s drink as a free welcome gift, so I did. Yay for saving on that!
I’m really happy to have a chance to catch up with Arlyn. The writing on the wall is right!
