Chu lives in East London, so he brought Joey, Gelle, and me around the area after we attended the coronation street party. Our first stop was Spitalfields Market, where we bought some coffee and he found a cute baby outfit adorned with acorns for our baby godson Matteo. On the way there, we passed by an elephant statue and had to pose.
Van Gogh
We had booked tickets for Van Gogh: the Immersive Experience, so we crossed the street from Spitalfields Market and went in. There were no actual Van Gogh paintings inside, just recreations, which was kinda disappointing. They had some on the wall and also as other creative interpretations of them, such as projections on the walls or an actual built out version of his painting of his bedroom.
There was also a room where they had his paintings as coloring book pages and you could color them in and then put it up on the wall along with other people’s work, or bring it home to put on your fridge door or something.
The last stop before going out was a room exhibiting two story projections of Van Gogh’s most compelling works, where you could sit and “step into his paintings.” The projections were accompanied with music and quotes.
We thought that it was an interesting experience but kinda pricey for what it was. It would have been better if they had actual Van Gogh paintings on display, probably.
Brick Lane
We then walked through Brick Lane, which is a famous street with interesting street art. Apparently this place is famous for curry houses, but we had other dinner plans so we didn’t get to try them.
St Katharine Docks
We had dinner at Côte Brasserie at St Katharine Docks. I had told Chu I wanted to try Sunday roast, so he chose this restaurant for it. They did not have the Sunday roast I had in mind, but they did have some really delicious roast pork with crispy skin. All the food we tried was delicious, actually.
But the best thing about the restaurant is the beautiful view of St Katharine Docks marina which we enjoyed because we had an al fresco table. The rows of boats sitting on the water against the beautiful blue sky made a beautiful backdrop for our pictures.
Then a funny thing happened during dinner. We were making all sorts of requests from the waiter, such as could he take our photo or take back someone’s dish, etc, and he complied with all of them so well that I asked for his name so I could mention it on a glowing review in their survey. I had read on Reddit to do this, so the waiter’s boss would know and he would get rewarded for it.
I guess Chu took this to mean that I was interested in the waiter so he asked him if he could also give my number to me. 😅 I was mortified because I have never asked for a man’s number ever in my life. Also I hadn’t really thought of him like that; though now that Chu brought it up, I realized that he was kinda good looking. He told Chu yes, but I was so taken aback that I didn’t give him my phone for it.
When he left, the others said I should get his number for real and I said “Fine! Might as well do something I’ve never done before!” So when he came back the next time, I did it, while everyone pretended to be busy talking to each other so as not to make things awkward – but it still was. 🤣
St Katharine Docks is near the tower bridge, by the way, so we managed to take pictures on the way home.
