It wasn’t a coincidence that we were in London during the coronation of King Charles. My London-based friends suggested we go there around that time because it might be more festive, and they were right! The coronation-related decors and parties and 2 bank holidays made everyone happier – we could sense the celebratory mood every time we walked the streets and rode the tube.
Regent Street
Joey, Gelle, and I headed to Regent Street and Picadilly Circus to check out the decorations. There were flags all over the streets.
There was also a lot of coronation-related merch in the shops. Gelle and I ended up buying totes from Fortnum and Mason.
Then when we found the iconic Picadilly Circus, we filmed a “meet-cute” scene between Joey and Gelle just because.
After walking around a lot, we had dinner at Shake Shack. But even though we were seated, we were still so tired! We wondered how much an Uber from here to Acton Town would cost, and made bets. When I looked at the app, it was lower than any of us bet, so we decided to book it. Travel is not as fun when you’re old LOL.
A Coronation Night
We were headed back to London from Scotland in a train while King Charles was being crowned, so we watched the ceremonies on our phones. When we got off the train, someone was handing out paper crowns, so we got one for all of us.
That night, we headed to our friend Chu’s flat where he was hosting dinner. We had a belated birthday surprise for Chi – a coronation-themed one! I brought the props all the way from Hong Kong. I got the idea because of this inside joke we had about buying friendship tiaras.
Chu made some fancy-looking appetizers and ordered other yummy food. It was fun to just hang out and chat and laugh and eat with old friends.
I missed this. I’m glad we had this moment.
Coronation Street Party
The next day, we headed to a street party at Melvin and AA’s neighbourhood. Everyone else were there first, while Chu and I were running late. They sent photos and videos of what they were doing and seeing, including a dance number on the street.
Chu and I tried to find the street where they were at, following Google Maps, and found this.
Was this it? Did we miss the whole thing?
Turns out we were at a different street completely. 😅
Luckily we hadn’t missed all the festivities, just the dancing. We still got to take pictures with King Charles… well his life-size poster, anyway. And we got to eat picnic food at the tables. It was a pretty cool event that I’m so glad I got to experience. I’m glad we chose to come here during this time!
