On New Year’s Day, I met up with my friends Beulah, May, and Mico for brunch at a Japanese restaurant called Shinko in Mong Kok. Beulah’s boyfriend Pax and his sister Pamela were here for the holidays, so they joined us.
There was a funny moment when both Mico and Pax (who is based in the Philippines) ordered the same meal but had very different opinions about it, with Pax thinking it was super yummy while to Mico it was just average. To be fair, food in Hong Kong tend to be of better quality than in the Philippines.
May also introduced us to a really delicious salad that the restaurant had, which had crunchy leaves that look like they have water beads on them. We googled it and discovered that it’s called crystalline ice plant.
After our meal, we went to look for coffee and dessert. May suggested HeSheEat which she and Mico saw while walking around earlier.
Pax, Beulah and I ordered souffle pancakes and an ice cream to share. May ordered normal pancakes because she said she doesn’t like the overly eggy taste of souffle pancakes. Mico got a matcha ice cream which was a freebie upon signing up for their app. We all ordered some coffee as well.
When the first pancakes arrived, Pax, Beulah and I dug into it. We noted that it wasn’t very fluffy or jiggly. May said that maybe it was her pancakes. So we immediately pushed the plate towards her with apologies.
But then when the waiter asked which pancakes this was, he said it was the souffle. So we took it back again. 😂
We concluded that our pancakes had probably been sitting out for a while that’s why they were not very fluffy.
The Hokkaido ice cream was good, but we can’t recommend the pancakes.
After dessert, we walked around the Mong Kok area to shop. They all ended up buying stuff from Adidas, which had an ongoing sale. Pax and Mico, both Kobe fans, got some Kobe tees.
Then May led us to one of her favourite noodle places called Shake, but it wasn’t a place with tables, so we just ordered three different noodles and ate them at the corner. They were really yummy, but some of them were cold, and they were full of coriander which taste like soap to me (apparently this is genetic).
