I know Star Trek was released in 2009 but I somehow missed it, and only decided to watch it in preparation for its sequel Star Trek into Darkness which caught my attention because of my favorite actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
Now I do know about Star Trek because it is one of the most popular shows that is always being referenced somewhere (like Big Bang Theory) and I know it has a huge following, but as I sat there watching the movie, I suddenly realized why: IT’S AWESOME! I mean it’s really quite epic! Whoever came up with such a cool universe really had a great imagination that I want to give him a Vulcan salute and tell him, “Live long and prosper!” except that I think he may have already died, given that Star Trek was created in the 1960’s. Wait… lemme check. Yep, he did die in 1991 and his name was Gene Roddenberry, may he rest in peace.
This movie, by the way, functions as a reboot of the franchise, showing us a prequel of the TV series. So you don’t even need to know anything about the original series in order to watch it, which is the perfect thing to lure new Trekkies like me. It shows us how the main characters James Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Guinto) met, but in an alternate reality created by their time-travelling nemesis Nero (who is Eric Bana unrecognizable under all that freaking makeup).
I did not recognize Eric Bana underneath all the makeup |
It turns out that the alternate timeline was created in an effort to free the film and the franchise from established continuity constraints while simultaneously preserving original story elements. [source] Ingenius move, eh?
I really enjoyed watching the film which was packed with action, adventure, humor and even a couple of heartbreaking scenes that made me cry. To my surprise, I ended up really liking this guy:

What? I have a thing for brainy guys who have personality quirks. Why do you think I love Sherlock? ;P
Now I’m even more excited for Star Trek into Darkness!!!
