Modern Family is one of my favorite TV shows because it has both comedy and heart. You will laugh at their antics but at the end of most episodes, there is usually a lesson to be learned that makes you appreciate your loved ones, especially your family.
In the latest episode (S04E17), “Best Men,” gay couple Mitch and Cam are asked to be the best men at their best girl friend Sal’s wedding. Right before the wedding, they go to a bar where Mitch and Cam give this toast:
Mitch: To Wild Sal! You gave it a good run, but like every legendary gunslinger there comes a time when you need to holster your weapons and ride off into the sunset.
Cam: But you took on every man who came to town!
Naturally this caused “Wild Sal” to freak out and get the jitters about the wedding, and she reacts the best way she knows how: she makes out with the bartender. Mitch tries to calm her down but Cam is beginning to think that she shouldn’t get married because commitment is something she obviously isn’t capable of. But then during the wedding ceremony, Cam is swayed to tears with Sal’s vow:
Marriage terrifies me. Take Mich and Cam. I use to think their life looks so boring, I could never do it – pay bills, wash dishes, wake up to the same face everyday? Euch! I felt sorry for them.
But they’re not bored. It turns out, when you’re with the right person, you can change shelf paper at 10 o’clock at night in your pajamas and not wanna be anywhere else. That’s how much they love each other. And when I just saw your face, I remembered… that’s how much I love you!
Can you blame Cam for his reaction? And me for mine? I guess it’s all about the right person, isn’t it?
