Dear Friends,
I had an opportunity to dine at another French restaurant when Chi’s friend Kitch invited us to have dinner at Balzac Brasserie last June. It was located in Rendezvous Gallery which was just a walking distance from Plaza Singapura, where we had spent the day going on a crazy makeup shopping spree after having a sumptuous lunch in Tim Ho Wan.
When we walked in, I immediately fell in love with the cozy “perfect date place” interior. I’m now berating myself for forgetting to take pictures of the entire place, but here are some snaps of us at our table.
Two new couples *love is in the air* |
Gelle and Joey *love is in the air* |
Me and Chi *love is in the air? LOL* |
We were seated all the way in on the couches, but there was this one spot with a wall crawling with vines that was indoors yet looked outdoorsy, like a very pretty garden. Maybe I’ll go back one of these days just to take a picture. LOL.
We perused the menu, and Kitch kindly pointed out that they are well-known for their beef cheeks. I am not really a beef lover, but I was intrigued by the name and reputation, so that’s what I ordered.
BEEF CHEEKS A LA CUILLERE (S$26) 48 hours braised wagyu beef cheek, bordelaise sauce, and mashed potato “grand mere” |
The beef was so tender, it wasn’t like beef at all! I loved it! The sauce was the perfect blend, and the mashed potatoes were just creamy and dreamy.
DUCK CONFIT (S$26) Duck leg confit served with an orange sauce and mashed potato “grand mere” |
Meanwhile, Gelle ordered another one of their bestsellers, the duck confit. It tasted okay, with its flaky crispy skin, but somehow it failed to impress us too much.
HOMEMADE HAND CUT POMMES FRITES (S$8) |
These look just like your average shoestring French fries, but they taste more delicious! The thinness makes it more crispy. You will want one for sharing on the table.
VALRHONA CHOCOLATE MOELLEUX (S$12) |
We ordered this for sharing and this was such a divine combination! Chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream just go so well together, no? Crumble the pastry served on top of the ice cream all over it to give it more texture and flavor.
HOMEMADE ICE CREAM ($5 a scoop) Salted caramel flavor |
We also tried a scoop of salted caramel homemade ice cream at Kitch’s recommendation, and this was mouthwateringly good! I love salted caramel anything and whoever invented that flavor should be given an award.
So I’d say that the place is really lovely and the food delicious, but it’s a bit pricey, so I’d save this place for very special occasions only. For more affordable French fare, I’d recommend TFS Bistrot. Now they know how to make a mean duck confit with foie gras.
