“Don’t buy a Samsung phone,” my friend cautioned us over lunch one day. “My husband dropped his, and its screen got shattered.”
“Did he drop it from a high place?” I wondered.
“No, he was just standing and it slipped from his grasp.”
“Eeps! A Samsung is definitely not for me, then!” I gasped. “I’m so clumsy that I’ve dropped my iphone a few times, but it’s never been broken, despite its flimsy casing.” I showed them my pretty yet super non-protective case.
“But remember when cell phones used to be practically indestructible?” I asked.
“Oh yes,” they nodded. “Nokia!”

“I used to sleep on the top bunk of a double bunk bed,” I shared. “One morning I woke up very late because I didn’t hear my alarm. Turns out my phone had slid off my bed and fallen to the floor, and it got dismantled. But after I gathered all its pieces back together, it was good as new.”
But that’s not even my most amazing Nokia story.
Back in college, I got heartbroken and decided to go drinking, for the first time in my life, with a few girl friends. We bought a bottle of Lambanog, which is a bubblegum-flavored hard liquor. It was so hard that after I downed two glasses, I couldn’t stand up without falling over. My vision was literally spinning.
In my drunken state, I took out my Nokia 3210 cellphone and drunk-dialled my ex.
You know what happened after that. Nothing good.
I said some things I’m not proud of. Actually, what I said was so embarrassing, probably, that my mind has gone and wiped it from my memory to protect me from dying from humiliation. It’s a self-preservation thing, you see. Good job, brain!
But anyway, after whatever it was that I said, my ex hung up on me. My reaction to that was to wail, “WHY WON’T YOU TALK TO ME????” Then I hurled my cellphone across the room, where it shattered… a jar. But the phone? It lay intact. Good as new. Not even a scratch.
So, yes. I do remember a time when cellphones were practically invincible. How about you? Do you have any Nokia stories to share?

Ahh I wish phones were still this indestructible! I've already broken one iPhone and I have a super thick but ugly case on it now to keep it for breaking when I drop it every day. My theory is that Apple makes them fragile so people have to keep replacing them. Like apple's smart enough to make a phone that won't break.

All my Nokia stories are very similar to yours. A friend once said she ran over hers with a car. But I never saw proof of this… X

I love love love Nokia… My favorite one is Nokia N86 and I'd had it for 2 years… Then I stupidly dropped it on the bus that I rode from school… And somebody stole it. Took me months to get over it.

I remember I had a Nokia 3330 and I wanted to get a new phone so I would conveniently drop it or something and the damn thing would NEVER break… It even fell into the swimming pool (that was accidental) – but somehow it was still working after the phone guy looked at it… Eventually I convinced my parents to upgrade my phone… Fast forward 9 years later, I STILL have that phone lying around

I drowned it in so much wine, I dropped it so many times, I throwed it… even a tram run passed it… it was a nokia e51… it still works :)))

Nokia phones are awesome . My mom used to have one , my little cousin threw it from running car . I was the one to pick up the (supposedly dead) phone . But it was fine as new one . Kudos to Nokia!

"where it shattered…a jar". I couldn't stop laughing while reading this! I wish I had a cell phone like this. They tend to go flying out of my hands and land on concrete or the wall….hehe…silly phones.
iPhones are so fragile, I'm surprised you give them props. If I had a dime for every iPhone screen I've shattered, I'd have a good 6 or 7 dimes.

That's hilarious! I don't have any, myself, but my husband has an old flip phone that he calls indestructible. When he had to go to an iphone for work, he mourned the loss of said flip phone. He still has it . . . just in case . . .

Hahaha I love the way you put it, so clever!
Dee says
OMG! That's too much!
Dee says
That sounds like a sound theory! I mean if Nokia can do it, why can't they, right?
Dee says
Nowadays most phones can't last that long! Too bad it got stolen!
Dee says
Omigosh your poor phone! Haha!
Dee says
LOL! The things you did just to get a new phone! Haha. Reminds me of a friend's story about how he would intentionally ruin his shoes to get new ones.
Dee says
Glad I'm not the only one who threw phones LOL. I think iphones would never survive a throw.

I think the 3310 is one of the most popular Nokia phones ever, it's the one always being pictures in Nokia memes. I wanted one because it was smaller and lighter than mine. The 3210 came just before it.
Dee says
Haha, glad it got the effect I wanted.
I'm surprised at how lucky I am to never have broken an iphone. I had a 3gs for a couple of years and I gave it up coz of battery problems, not coz it got broken. My 4s is over 2 years old now too and it's still in good shape.
Dee says
Wow, that is amazing! Kudos to Nokia indeed!
Dee says
Oooh, I remember how cool flip phones used to be! I had a couple of them. Feels really cool to flip it open. At first. Then the novelty fades and it just becomes annoying. LOL.

Here's my story: I was giving my 2 year old sister a shower while texting (like the typical teenager–texting all the time) and I dropped my nokia phone into the toilet right next to the shower. It was fine. Why can't they make phones like that now?
Dee says
OMG your phone was very sturdy even by Nokia standards! I had a friend who dropped her Nokia 3310 into a toilet bowl and it didn't survive! You're so lucky!

Hahaha! I had a lot of great great moments with Nokia too! WIth the last Nokia I had, I would throw it across the room whenever I would get angry, have dropped it several times, used it to tap the table etcetera but it would still be alive. Maybe a part of the casing would break but it would still be functional…awesome!

I broke my iPhone 5 2 months after I got it. haha. it also just slipped from my hand. =/ apparently, current phones are designed to last you a maximum of 2 years. 2 years is already a long time!
Dee says
Your poor phone! Haha. Nokia is just simply amazing.
Dee says
I agree. For some reason I lucked out with my iphone, it's over 2 years old but still working fine.

Hahaha. It's still the best in my opinion 🙂
