So on New Year’s day I decided that I wanted to do something new, so I checked out 2Degree Ice Art, Singapore’s largest ice sculptures exhibition to date, with my friends Jemma and Joc.
I have never experienced real winter before (no wait, I did in Korea, but there was no ice involved, just 2 degrees celsius), so I was pretty excited about this and even wore boots and a winter scarf. It’s -15 degrees inside, so you have to bring your own winter coat or rent one for S$5, separate from the S$32 ticket price which includes a pair of white gloves that you get to keep after. (We got 10% discount on our tickets for using Mastercard.)
Now I had been to an ice sculpture show before, back in Star City in Manila, Philippines, but this was a lot different – the place didn’t smell like the inside of a freezer, the floors were not slippery because they were carpeted, and the ice sculptures were a lot bigger and prettier and had led lights inside them to make them more colorful.
The theme of the show was international landmarks, so it was like going around the world! So incredibly exciting! Even though it was hard to press the camera button with gloved fingers, we took about a bajillion pictures and I had a hard time narrowing them down to these few:
The most exciting part was the giant ice slide at the back. You can ride a tube down a huge slide or slide your ass down one of the two narrower slides on each side of it. We opted for the latter because there was a long queue for the tubes. It was so fun! Weeeeee! ๐
Afterwards I was shocked that my camera’s battery was quickly drained. Does cold affect battery life? Joc said her phone’s battery died too. She had been using it to take pictures.
Our fingers were so frozen that it tingled, and after leaving the place we immediately headed to the The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and had bowls of bak kut teh soup and porridge to warm us up.
We were so giddy with delight at our new experience that we wanted to do more! We almost got on the Marina Bay Sands gondola, actually, but we restrained ourselves and decided to reserve it for another day. We did have a whole new year ahead of us, after all.
