Cate used to call me Bella. Not because I’m best friends with werewolves or obsessed with good-looking vampires but because I am so terribly clumsy. I’m always tripping all over my feet and I don’t know why.
Yesterday, it happened again, outside the mall Wisma Atria in Orchard. I was just walking at a normal pace and the next thing I knew, my right foot had slid into a gap on the side and I realized with horror that I couldn’t stop myself from falling. My left knee and right palm collided with the rough concrete floor. I was in so much pain, but a couple was looking at me, the girl asking me in a concerned voice, “Are you all right?” so I just had to forget the pain, stand up, say “I’m fine, thank you,” and keep on walking. A short distance later, I stopped and allowed myself to grimace in pain and appraise the damage – angry red scrapes on my left knee. Again. (Sigh)
Then I remembered that time in high school when my foot slid off the sidewalk in front of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and I landed facedown on the pavement. I had quickly jumped up and walked on as if nothing happened.
And that time we played dodgeball in the backfield and I was so intent on dodging the ball that I failed to dodge a freshly dug compost pit and I fell into it.
And that time I got off a jeepney and it started running when I wasn’t off yet and I jumped, landing on one knee in the middle of La Purisima street, and I was in my college school uniform (white blouse tucked into a pencil cut skirt).
And that time my classmate Lara and I were walking out of the campus on our way to the hospital to visit Silvie, and I tripped and scraped both knees so badly, they bled and the people who saw me in the hospital thought that was what I was in there for.
And that time my P&G friends and I were walking in a line into our seats in the dark cinema house and I was in front of them when I suddenly disappeared from their sight, only to pop back into view a few seconds later. I had tripped and fallen down, and even though the cinema’s floor was carpeted, I still sustained scrapes on my knees.
Maybe I shouldn’t wear skirts too much. Pants would probably protect my poor knees. Or should I start wearing knee pads?
