It hadn’t immediately occurred to me that when the clock struck midnight on December 31 of last year, it wouldn’t be just an ordinary year coming to a close but rather, the first decade of the 21st century. I only realized this about a few days ago when all these lists and awards started coming up.
It has been an awesome decade for me. Here is a recap of everything I’ve been through in the past ten years.
*I entered and graduated from College.
*I became active in my extracurriculars. In elementary and high school I was limited to my academics.
*I learned how to be a public speaker, thanks to my college org SALT that had us talking to crowds of high school students. People who didn’t know me then find it hard to believe that I was painfully shy before.
*I joined the workforce and had a lot of jobs in different companies. My longest time and my favorite is in P&G.
*I made lots of new friends and realized that they are my best achievements.
*I had a boyfriend. Pre-Y2K, I was NBSB (no boyfriend since birth). I dated a lot of guys, fell in love, and also got my heart broken several times, but life goes on. My heart goes on.
*I left my hometown and became independent in the metro, where I can say I truly grew up in the real sense.
*I learned how to cook, and not just the basics. Before college, I could only cook rice and boiled egg and instant noodles.
*I blossomed into a woman. I learned to use girly clothes, apply makeup and style my hair. I lost weight and gained it all back, but that didn’t make me go back into the I’ll-wear-huge-shirts-to-cover-my-fat-body phase.
*I discovered the internet and embraced it through all the stages – email and blogs and social media.
*I traveled a lot. Pre-Y2K, I had only been to Manila once and mostly around Mindanao. Now I’ve been all over the Philippines and visited six other countries besides it.
*I fell in love with technology and now own the recommended basics – ipod, cellphone with camera, digital camera and macbook.
I’ve achieved so much in the past decade. So what am I expecting to do in this next one?
*Find my ideal job in my ideal company.
*Meet the right guy for me, get married and have a family.
*Save and stop living on a salary-to-salary existence. Buy a house. Invest. Pay off all debts.
*Still keep on traveling, but go beyond Asia’s boundaries this time.
*Take writing to the next level and get published and paid for it.
*Continue to make new friends but hold on to the old ones who are worth keeping.
*Make a difference in other people’s lives.
*Aspire for more, for better.
Basically, be on track with my personal mission statement.
The world beckons. Isn’t it exciting?
