Yves discovered Katong, supposedly Singapore’s food enclave, and suggested going there. So off we went this evening. We tried out Everything with Fries. The books on the shelves against a wall gave the place a homey feel. The english songs blaring from their speakers also added to the cozy ambiance.
When the waitress arrived, we gave our orders and got a bit aligaga when she asked us what kind of fries did we want (thick or shoestring), what flavor (original, salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, and I forgot what else), and did we want caesar salad or coleslaw.
Our drinks were served first. When I asked my favorite question, “Which is your bestseller?” I was told it was the butterscotch shake, so that’s what Arlyn and I had. It looked and tasted like vanilla. It wasn’t bad, just nothing that blew our socks off.
Next came the one egg soup which was served with a huge egg white omelet floating on top. It had an unexpected sour taste, but it was creamy and the pepper went well with the soup. Still nothing I would come back for.
Then the main meals arrived. Arlyn and I each ordered their bestselling burger, the cheeseburger. I chose caesar salad and thick sour cream and onion fries for the sides. This turned out to be the wrong order for me, on all counts. All three things on this order tasted good, but I liked the other people’s orders better. Haha.
The burger patty was big and juicy, but it was a tad too salty.
Betchie and Yves selected salmon, something I’ve never been a fan of. Yves said it was too oily, and she didn’t like the tartar sauce. We all loved Betchie’s shoestring original flavored french fries though. It was crispier than our thick ones.
My favorite main course was Mark’s order – tandoori chicken sandwich. It tasted like chicken barbeque on toasted bread. I also liked the coleslaw which came with red cabbage.
We weren’t able to finish all our food, but we ordered dessert. Betchie ordered the nuttella crepe. It didn’t look like a normal crepe. The layers looked interesting indeed.
Yves ordered the the hot banana and butterscotch pudding with vanilla ice cream, the recommended dessert in the article she found. It tasted great – uncommon flavors and the combination of hot and cold made for one unique dessert experience.
We had one major gripe though: why isn’t everything served with fries? How misleading. Tsktsktsk. I mean, the desserts should have been served this way:
We were amused, by the way, with these two “waiter ushers” in the hallway whose job, it seemed, was to call the waiters whenever the customers in the “library room” needed them. Yves later asked them what their roles really were, and she was told that they were observers. Which brought to mind a whole new slew of questions altogether. Why were they observing? Were they auditors? Interns? Kids of the owner?
Anyway, here we all are:
And here is an amusing pic of Arlyn and me. Amusing because the background looks iffy. Hahaha!
And even though we were already so full to bursting, we still dropped by Awfully Chocolate, which was just across the street, to buy some takeaway treats. I bought one of these cupcakes. Arlyn ordered some stacked chocolate cakes. Betchie tried out the truffles. Yves ordered a bit of each. Somebody has a sweet tooth.
And now I’m so excited for our upcoming plans – a trip “abroad,” a trip to the Singapore art museum (just because we’ve never been), a French movie date, and a Marina Sands Buffet. Yup, making that “wrong choice” back in 2008 was definitely right! 🙂
