Naats, who used to be my colleague in KPMG (2004-2005), came to Singapore for a vacation with her family. They are now based in Melbourne, Australia, and they’re staying here for a week before heading to the Philippines to spend the holidays there. What a long vacation! What a sweet life! Suddenly, migrating to Australia sounds like a great idea. Hohoho! (It’s nearing Christmas, so my laugh should be like that already.)
We met up at Tang’s fourth level. Both Naats and Stella had brought along their respective families; they’re both married with kids. We had coffees and desserts at Island Cafe. Naat’s sister in law was the only one who had ever been there and we ordered their cheesecake and carrot cake upon her recommendation. I ordered my staple at all coffee shops – mocha. They were all quite nice.
We didn’t get a picture of everyone, but here is one of me, Naats and Stella. Ste is currently seven months pregnant but she hasn’t gained much weight; she only looks as though she decided to shoplift a watermelon and hide it in her tummy.
I enjoyed the conversations, though I did feel slightly out of place, being the only one who was single in the group. Naat’s mother-in-law noticed this and asked me, “You’re not yet married yet, are you?” I laughed and said, “Yes, is it that obvious?” She replied, “Well I noticed that everyone has talked about pregnancies and kids and you haven’t said anything.” Then her next words made me laugh yet at the same time made me feel sad. “A girl like you needs family. Lower your standards. That tall, dark and handsome guy doesn’t exist.” Sigh, maybe she’s right (not about the tall, dark and handsome part… those aren’t even part of my standards at all! LOL). While it’s awesome to be single, I can’t stay this way forever. At some point I have to go to the next level. Wouldn’t it be nice to have one of these of my very own someday? Not soon, of course. But eventually, I now realize.
