A few weeks ago I saw this trailer and I was hooked on the premise. Wow!
What if someone walked up to you and offered you a chance to access 100% of your brain, a chance to access the best you that you can possibly be, but at a risk… what would you do?
Our main character Eddie is given this chance. He starts off as an uninspired writer who can’t even write the first line of his book. One day, while he is walking the streets with unkempt hair and clothes, he runs into his ex brother-in-law who offers him a pill to help him get out of his rut.
Popping the pill gives him so much clarity – all his memories and knowledge are suddenly at his disposal, and it’s amazing what one can do when given this power – he thinks his way out of tight spots, he finishes his book in four days, he makes loads of money off the stock market, he gets the girl back, etc etc.
Of course when something seems too good to be true, it usually is, so there’s a catch. But was the risk worth it? I’ll leave it to you to find out.
I loved the movie because aside from the interesting “makes me think” premise of the Matrix or Inception kind, the director made use of brilliant visual techniques that enhanced the storytelling experience, like perpetual zooms and lighting and… well I’m no film expert, so I don’t really know what to call them… so I’ll just call them special effects.
There was the excellent choice of lead actor as well. Brad is such a brilliant actor who switched personas convincingly. When he was an uninspired writer, he looked totally unattractive with a matching dull persona, but when he popped his pill, he transformed into a complete hottie with the charisma and wit to boot. It made me realize what a humongous difference a person’s clothes and personality can have on his attractiveness.
The movie is a brilliant thriller that keeps you at the edge of your seat (and in our case, peeking at the screen with one eye closed behind our fingers). It was so engaging from start to finish with no “how much longer till this movie ends?” moments at all. Definitely worth the time and money (though I didn’t spend any as my movie ticket was free haha).
