My phone registered a call from an unknown number.
“Hello?” I answered, wondering who could possibly be calling at such a late hour.
“Can we be phone pals?” was the reply I got.
Normally I would’ve said no and dropped the call immediately, but I recognized this voice.
“Rey? You’re here?”
Apparently my flight attendant friend was in Singapore for the night. He was with his college classmate, they were gonna have dinner. Could I please join them, could I ask Tyne, who is his cousin, to come along too.
So we agreed to meet in Tampines Mall. Luckily for me, Tyne was in Tampines Mall at that moment so I just told her to stay put.
Meanwhile, I changed out of my nightshirt and rushed outside, glad that I had not removed my makeup yet. When we got there, though, it was so late that most of the food shops were already closed.
Luckily Tyne knew of a place with a strip of 24-hour food joints – Simpang Bedok.
So off we went, and had dinner at this place called Tang’s.
We ordered a set meal. Since Rey was allergic to crabs, I asked if we could change it to fried prawn with salted egg yolk instead and they said yes. Turns out everyone else had never tried it yet and they were won over, just like me.
We also had sambal stingray, sizzling tofu, stir-fried beef with kailan, sweet and sour chicken balls and tom yum soup.
We also dared to try coconut wheat grass drinks. I was afraid to try it because I heard that wheat grass tastes like grass, but mixed with the coconut, it just tasted like pure coconut.
To wrap up the meal we told Rey to try the iced kacang for dessert.
It was a total #dietfail but it was worth it. Who knows when we’ll see Rey again?
