I almost watched X-Men: First Class by myself today because almost everyone I invited had already seen it. I would’ve done it too, but luckily Tyne was still available, so I dropped one yoga class so we could go watch the 7:10 show at Cathay Cineleisure. It was worth all my trouble.
I was a fan of X-Men as a child but I only ever saw Professor X and Magneto as their old nemesis selves. This installation goes back in time to show us how the two met, became friends and eventually enemies. I never thought there would ever come a day that I would say these words but: Charles Xavier is so sexy! I find wit to be a major turn on. Eric was not bad too. That said, they were the most worthwhile characters to watch on that film. And oh, Sebastian Shaw too. And the action scenes and special effects were superb.
Now for my gripes: firstly, the setting was supposed to be in the 60’s but it didn’t feel like it at all. Not even the black and white actual footage of the president’s announcements dispelled the obviously modern feel of the setting. Secondly, they messed up some of the comic book stories. See, that’s the problem when you’ve read the book – or the comics, in this instance. You can’t help but find fault with an otherwise a-okay movie script. While I loved how they changed Charles (I don’t recall the prof ever being that witty and sexy), I can’t buy the idea of him and Mystique growing up as quasi-siblings. One more thing that bothers me is the existence of Alex Summers (who was played by that guy from Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me” music video, as realized by Tyne) in the story. I mean, Alex is supposed to be Scott’s (Cyclops) younger brother. What, is he father now instead?
But those are just minor things not worth ruining the whole experience for. Overall, I’d say it was an action flick worth watching.
P.S. I just found my ideal man. Charles Xavier, I love you! XD
