I live for moments that make me laugh out loud literally, even though sometimes I worry that other people would think I was crazy for laughing by myself, out of nowhere. Today’s moment came when my friend April discussed a scene from the book Something Borrowed with me. I agreed that it was very romantic scene indeed, that I had highlighted that part in my kindle, actually, then I said:
Me: Napanood mo ba ung movie? Ang gwapo ni Dex dun.
April: hindi pa eh! magddownload nga ko.
Me: Ang gwapo nya talaga mamatay. Mas kilig yung first part ng movie kesa sa book actually. May inibang konti.
Wag magpanic. Hindi yan nicholas sparks. Hindi sya gwapo mamatay. Meron bang gwapo mamatay? Ang weird ko talaga! Hahaha!!
So in a nutshell, don’t worry folks, Dex doesn’t die.
Anyway, since I posted that, might as well post my review of the book. Spoiler alert, so leave if you haven’t read/seen them.
I had seen the movie and totally fell in love with hottie Dex there, so it helped to have a visual of him while I was reading the book.
There were scenes in the book that they improved for the movie. I know it’s usually the books that are better than the movies, but so far I noticed that movies better than books are those light chick lit novels, like The Devil Wears Prada and PS I Love You. Maybe because the movie makes them more cohesive? Or maybe it depends on which you saw/read first.
Anyway, Something Borrowed is not for everyone.
I can imagine some people getting all huffy about it because its premise condones cheating – Rachel steals her bestfriend Darcy’s fiance Dex.
Now I don’t condone stealing other people’s boyfriends, especially if they belong to your friends, but I couldn’t help but root for Rachel in the story because (1) Darcy was such a superficial bitch, (2) Darcy and Dex obviously didn’t belong together and (3) I could so relate to Rachel.
Not the part about having a superficial bitchy best friend, though, because I don’t tolerate people like that and am proud to say that all my close friends definitely don’t fall under that category. But she just said a lot of things that just hit home, you know? Like this one:
When you are in a relationship, you are aware that it might end. You might grow apart, find someone else, simply fall out of love. But a friendship isn’t a zero-sum game, and as such, you assume that it will last forever, especially an old friendship. You take its permanence for granted, which might be the very thing so dear about it.
This hit me hard because some time ago, I had a major fight with a best friend of mine and as I told her then, though I had my heart broken many times by different guys, this hurt worse.
Don’t worry, we’re friends again, like Rachel and Darcy. You will always forgive true friends no matter how much they hurt you, because you become so much a part of each other that losing them is like losing a piece of yourself. And you wouldn’t want to let go of a piece of yourself, would you?
I have no real faith in my own happiness. And then there is Darcy. She is a woman who believes that things should fall into her lap, and consistently, they do. They always have. She wins because she expects to win. I do not expect to get what I want, so I don’t. And I don’t even try.
She says this because she doesn’t actually fight for Dex. She just waits for him to make the choice, which may annoy some people, but I just felt for her because most of the time, that’s me. I always give up guys I like to give way for other girls.
But then she said this, which is in line with my “you can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket” motto:
I have learned that you make your own happiness, that part of going for what you want means losing something else. And when the stakes are high, the losses can be that much greater.
So Rachel goes for her happiness, and I’m all “way to go girl!!”
And since I’m discussing highlights, might as well share the kilig one that got to April and me:
The subject line reads “You.” You are an amazing person, and I don’t know where the feelings that you give me come from. What I do know is that I am completely and utterly into you and I want time to freeze so I can be with you all the time and not have to think of anything else at all. I like literally everything about you, including the way your face shows everything you’re thinking and especially the way it looks when we are together and your hair is back and your eyes are closed and your lips are open just a little bit. Okay. That’s all I wanted to say.
I used to be that girl who hated people who strayed because I was at the victim end of the spectre. But after this story, I realized that it’s okay, so long as no one in the equation is married, of course. I mean, so what if Dex has been with Darcy for seven years? What if they’re not the ones meant to be? Shouldn’t he be given a chance to find happiness with Rachel, his true soulmate?
And if you’re thinking, “poor Darcy,” well don’t worry, she too finds her own happy ever after, in the sequel Something Borrowed, a book narrated in her voice.
The first part of the books is actually a pain to read because Darcy is so superficial, it’s so annoying to hear her thoughts! It starts off where the first book ends, and lightly touches some of the scenes there too.
But she doesn’t end up with Marcus, the guy that she cheats on Dex with and whose baby she gets pregnant with. Marcus turns out to be such a loser and bails on her big time, so she has to go fend for herself and her unborn child and moves to London to live with her friend Ethan who initially hates her and sided with Rachel in the whole Dex episode.
Darcy ends up falling in love, really in love, for the first time in her life, and she becomes a completely different person in the process.
So see, if Dex hadn’t let her go, she would never have found her true love, and she would never have become a good person too. So all’s well that ends well. 🙂
