We love everything French, so we celebrated Betchie’s birthday at a quaint French restaurant in Little India called TFS Bistrot, formerly known as The French Stall.
This was recommended to Betchie by her friend’s French boyfriend, so we thought it should have the genuine stuff. The restaurant was founded 10 years ago by a Parisian who has been in Singapore for 14 years now. We learned this because we got to talk to the owner himself after we had our dinner. But I am getting ahead of myself. I’ll get to that later.
Anyway, the restaurant describes itself this way:
TFS Bistrot brings a bit of Paris to Singapore. The open air bistrot specializes in French food that is authentically good but not fancy, with an extensive wine list for every taste. Our aim is to provide classical French food at popular prices.
I have to agree with that description. The food really is good, and the price is not too steep. Maybe that’s because the restaurant itself is not too fancy, just a stall, as its original name says, but a quaint, nicely decorated stall with a lovely ambiance, probably helped along by the nicely chosen European background music. I love the tablecloths!
We were served by a Filipina waitress who was very nice when we asked her to recommend what to order. We ordered a couple of appetizers, three main courses and a dessert. Then to make it a genuinely french experience, we had a glass of wine each. I chose the rose wine because I like my wine sweet.
We sipped our wines till our food arrived. We started off with the appetizers. It was my first time to try the famous escargot I keep reading about in books. That’s snails, by the way. It tasted very different from the Philippine kuhol.

The three main meals were delicious, but the pièce de résistance would have to be the duck leg confit with pan-fried foie gras. The skin was so light and flaky and the meat so tender. Miam!

For dessert, Betchie wanted the tiramisu but when our waitress found out it was her birthday, she suggested the giant profiterole instead, and when she served it, she actually played the happy birthday song over the speakers and served the dessert with a candle, so that everyone in the bistro was staring at our table. Then Betchie made a wish and blew out her candle.

After polishing off our dinner, we were asked us to move to a table outside because they were already closing up the place. We ordered more wine and the owner came to our table for a chat. He’s only the second french guy I’ve talked to in person but I absolutely adore their accent.
We talked about cheese fondue (fun fact: “fondu” is french for melted, hence the name), and we said we’d come back and eat that with white wine sometime. And we definitely will. Can’t wait! 🙂
