Gelle and I set a date so we could discuss our itinerary for our upcoming Phuket trip with our P&G friends Kes and Drew. She told me to meet me in Marmalade Pantry. I had never heard of the place before, so I was completely clueless as to what to expect.
I loved the cozy ambiance. Set at the center of the third floor of Ion Orchard, one of Singapore’s most luxurious malls, the view of the high end stores around the place just adds to the “high tea” atmosphere. I was almost ashamed I was wearing a romper and flip-flops.
Gelle explained that she chose the place because last time she and her husband Joey came here, they had had to turn them away because they were full and they had run out of cupcakes, which was what she wanted in the first place. Her curiosity had gotten piqued, so she just had to come back.
We decided to share the roast chicken and avocado caesar salad and the mint tea that she had ordered and turned to the menu to decide on which cupcakes to try.
We decided on the red velvet cupcake, which seems to be the rage these days, and since we’re chocoholics, we wanted the chocolate deluxe too. Unfortunately they ran out of the latter, so we settled on the William, which also had a chocolate base.
The salad was as tasty as salads go, and the tea had a soothing minty taste with a hint of lemongrass, which I first mistakenly thought was floral but later correctly identified.
I tried the red velvet cupcake first; while the cream topping was nice, I wasn’t blown away by the taste of the cupcake itself.
It was a different story for the William, however. The frosting was way too sweet but the chocolate cupcake made me hyperventilate from its deliciousness. This is exactly what I imagined Max’s cupcake from the sitcom 2 Broke Girls to taste like. I imagine the chocolate deluxe would have been perfect (without the too sweet pear frosting).
My only problem with the place is the really bad internet signal. How were we supposed to open Gelle’s ipad to plan our itinerary then? So I suggested we leave and find a Starbucks to do that, but not without looking around first. So we visited our usual haunts.
After a while we felt sleepy and ducked into Starbucks. It was full. Drats. So we looked around and settled on TCC. I couldn’t find any mocha in their menu, so I had a cup of Choco-coffee decadence. It tastes exactly as the name implies. It was too decadent for my taste. I favor the good ol’ mocha. Will you put that on your menu, please, like any other normal cafe?
After we had finalized (sort of) our Phuket itinerary on a piece of tissue, we decided to leave. We were supposed to go home already until I remembered that Dred mentioned there was sale in H&M last week. So we went there to see if it was still on, and it was, and we panicked, to put it mildly. We were there from 8 to 11 pm.
We didn’t even realize how late it was, we had gotten so engrossed in trying on dresses and scarves and headbands.
We realized that we were hungry because we hadn’t had dinner yet, so after paying for our purchases, we scouted around for a food place that was still open. Luckily, Burger King in Orchard Cineleisure saved our rumbling tummies. I ate quickly so I could still make it to the MRT.
That was tiring but fun! Can’t wait to do that in August when our entire foursome is here, when Chi and Ngangi come to visit! 😀
