I’ve been unhappy with Cameron, my Canon Ixus 80is camera’s performance lately and I thought, it’s been four years anyway, about time to upgrade, right? And besides, eversince Ngangi bought her Canon Powershot S90 two years ago, I’ve been dreaming about owning one as well. When a dream doesn’t die after so long, you know you gotta do something about it. So last Saturday, I bought the latest version… the Canon Powershot S100.
What gave me the hunger for the S100 over other more affordable point-and-shoots is that it takes almost SLR-quality photos but is still handy-dandy. SLRs never appealed to me because of their bulkiness.
Katniss. Because she shoots well. |
When I posted a picture of my camera on Instagram, Jek asked, “What is the name?” He knows I have a penchant for naming my gadgets; we have that in common. (His latest gadget, by the way, is an ipad he named “Yuki” which is Japanese for “snow.” Love the connection to the white color!) At that point I hadn’t thought of one yet but as I typed out my intended reply: “Blackie? LOL. I don’t know yet, will get back to you on that,” the answer suddenly came to me, as though an arrow had flown swiftly through the air and hit its target – a specific brain cell in my head. “Katniss. Because she shoots well.” I have never named a gadget this perfectly before.
And speaking of Katniss:
I just love the Katniss hairdo |
FYI, in above picture, it was dark in my room but Katniss automatically brightened the shot. I didn’t even need to use a flash (which would have been impossible for this shot, anyway, since the mirror would have bounced it right back) or edit the photo to make it lighter. I was so happy with the photo qualities that for the first time in ages, I felt that hunger again – the hunger to take photo after photo after photo, like I had the urge to go somewhere nice just so I could take pictures, and the urge to shoot the mundane, because Katniss makes everything beautiful. Yes, Katniss is definitely a keeper. And you’ll be seeing more of her shots in these pages. 🙂
