Zenie loves to bake so for her 30th birthday, we decided to bake her a cake.
We decided to use a ready-to-bake cake mix instead of making one from scratch and bought A Betty Crocker devil’s food cake mix.
We took the mix and placed it in a bowl with eggs and oil. Since Maya didn’t have an electric mixer yet, we had to mix the batter by hand, which is kinda tiring, but it did get the job done.

Then we poured the mixture into Maya’s new cake pan and popped it into her new mini oven. She noticed that it was leaking because apparently we hadn’t closed the pan’s bottom all that well so we had to take it back out and repour and reclose the thing. Well at least we caught it early on huh.
Cake batter cooking in the oven |
We checked on the cake by sticking a fork into the center. When it came out dry, it meant it was done, so we took it out of the oven, but not without incident. I had a hard time getting it out because we didn’t have proper oven mitts and it slid out and almost landed on my bare thighs. I say “almost” because it stopped in time, but not before we all sort of screamed in the kitchen. Haha. Gay said it was a good thing I didn’t end up with burned thighs. Thank goodness. So we took the cake out of its mold and Maya gave me a knife so I could cut off the top. Ahhh, so this was what we had failed to do that first time I tried to bake a cake with my other friends, that’s why our cake looked funny. The cake tasted delicious! Not bad for an instant mix.
Freshly baked cake |
We made our own frosting based on a recipe we found online, but we substituted some of the ingredients which is probably why it had a lighter color and a sweeter taste than expected. Moral lesson: do not substitute ingredients! But for an amateur cake, it tasted fine.

And the finished product? Tada! Okay so maybe it’s not much to look at but it did taste fine and it’s the thought that counts, right? Haha.
The birthday cake |
And now to give it to the birthday girl. There’s one problem, though – she’s in Jersey Island, UK, while we’re in Singapore. So how? Why, through a video, of course, complete with messages and toasts all set to one of her favorite songs, Raise Your Glass. Watch it below.
Happy birthday, Zenie! 😀
