Safe Haven is a movie based on a book written by Nicholas Sparks. What made it different from typical Sparks novels is that it is not just a love story but a thriller as well. Here is the book plot:
When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family. But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her… a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards… and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven. -Nicholas Sparks
I loved the book more than the movie version, which, as expected, deviated a bit from the book. Still, it was an enjoyable film to watch, especially because of Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and his shoulders. He stars opposite Julianne Hough of musicals Footloose and Rock of Ages, so I half expected her to break out in song and dance numbers all throughout the movie. No such luck. Tsk.

But even though this story was a bit different from other Sparks stories, there were still similarities though. Like that canoe scene. Doesn’t it remind you of The Notebook? And of course the same thing happens afterwards – rain. The Notebook does it way better though. It does lots of things way better. Still, if you’re looking for a light romance flick with a bit of a thrill and a twist, this ought to hit the spot.
