While I was out for lunch with some friends last time, one of us asked the rest about what the role of maid of honor entailed as she was going to be one for her sister’s wedding. So we told her that she had to literally be the bride’s maid and I kept on emphasizing her duty to man the train. Then this conversation happened but I don’t remember who said what so I’ll just put the names down as friends 1-4.
Friend 1: The biggest rule is: “thou shall not outshine the bride.”
Friend 2: That’s true!
Friend 3: And that is also why if you’re the bride, you shouldn’t invite your overly pretty friends as part of your entourage if you don’t want them to outshine you!
Friend 4: That’s a good point! Then I should just invite my non-pretty friends to be in my entourage!
Friend 1: OMG. So if someday you’ll invite me in your entourage, I’ll remember this day and be insulted!
Friend 2: Haha and when that day comes you’re fuming and someone asks you, ‘Why are you mad?’ ‘Because my friend asked me to be in her entourage!’ ‘Then shouldn’t you be flattered?’ ‘No! Because we had this conversation where she said she’ll only invite her ugly friends so they won’t outshine her!’
LOL!
I told my closest friends about this and then said:
Me: So I’m sorry girls, but you can’t be part of my entourage.
Chi: We’ll put mud on our face! And wear tattered clothes!
Me: OMG! But you’ll steal more attention that way! The point is to NOT outshine the bride!
Chi: Haha! But I think even if you don’t get us, we would still feel that we’re in your entourage! Like we’ll have our hair and makeup done and we’ll wear long gowns and go there super early hahaha!
Ngangi: We will make our own entourage! We’ll be like powder girls instead of flower girls. Bubble girls. Balloon girls. Something!!! Anything!!!
Chi: Even call girls will do!
I was literally laughing out loud while all this was being said.
But honestly, I really don’t believe in that “rule”and in fact I agree with what Gelle said later on in that same chat thread as above.
Gelle: It’s more okay if you have an entourage of pretty girls because birds of the same feather flock together!
She has a point, right? So if I do get married, expect a pretty entourage, people. And I don’t care that they’ll outshine me. I will pick whom I love and that’s all that matters.
