When I signed up for the A-Z blogging challenge, one of the requirements was to turn off word verifications for comments. Why? Because while Captcha or word verifications deters bot comments, it also deters human comments.
On the day I deactivated Captcha, I had this conversation with my friends:
Me: Grrr I want to comment on your blog but captcha doesn’t want to work. Maybe we need to turn it off.
Ngangi: How?? I hate captcha!
Me: Wait, will figure it out. Settings. Comments. Show word verification. No.
Ngangi: Ok done!
Me: The risk, though, is that we’ll get spam comments. But hopefully we won’t get too much, no?
Chi: No we won’t get spam coz we’re not popular!
Me: Spam as in robots, Chi. The purpose of captcha is to deter robot posting. So I think even if we’re not popular we can still get spammed.
Ngangi: Who’s behind the robots??
Me: Err… I don’t know. That is the limit of my knowledge hahaha.
Ngangi: Hahaha. Blogs really have a different world! They actually have robots LOL!
Chi: There are robots IRL?!! Haha!
Me: LOL I guess they’re not really robots with bodies. Probably just computer robots. They call them bots for short.
Then suddenly, Gelle jumps in with this:
Dear Reader,
If you’re a robot, please don’t leave any comments. But if you’re human, please write a comment that proves you are one… maybe by telling me what is the essence of being a human? I don’t know. Get creative! That’s the whole point, isn’t it? Humans can think, robots can’t.

This post is part of the A to Z Challenge, a blog hop that goes through the alphabet for all the days of April except Sundays. I have decided to go with the theme of Alliterations.

I am very grateful when I find blogs with word verification turned off because I am dyslexic and struggle to read the word verification I need to post to prove I am human! By the way the audio version of word captcha is rubbish – just in case you were wondering why I don't use that option 🙂
Dee says
Oh dear, it really would be more difficult for dyslexic people! I'm glad I made your life easier, in this very small way. Haha. I have tried the audio version and you're right – it is rubbish!

I had a similar conversation with myself, but it ended with Robots Robots Stay Away – good luck with the challenge
Dee says
Haha, I talk to myself a lot too, so I can imagine what a funny conversation that must have been. Thanks and good luck to you too! 🙂

I would actually enjoy spam comments for a while if they were hand-typed by real robots. There'd be a novelty.

And thank goodness for people turning off CAPTCHA. What a wretched bit of code – it's crueler to people with vision problems than anything else.
Dee says
Haha, now that's a novel idea indeed! I too would enjoy that! :D
CE Francies says
I agree, CAPTCHA is so frustrating. But I get so much spam on my site sometimes, I'm afraid people will be deterred as well, feeling their comments will get lost among it. I need to find a human-friendly alternative.
Dee says
Perhaps you can approve comments instead?
Dani says
I am not a bot! Promise!
Dani @ Entertaining Interests
#warriorminion
Dee says
Hahaha, that you have to prove! 😀
Su-sieee! Mac says
I imagine those robots like the older mechanical ones such as the one in "Lost in Space" or that one in the Jetsons. LOL
Dee says
Haha my friends must have done the same! The Jetsons! How I loved that show. I do believe their robot's name is Rosie, if memory serves me right.
Lizzy says
Awww but that robot image looks like a Mr. Right! He brought you flowers 🙂
Dee says
Hahaha and I'm such a sucker for flowers, too. 😀
