When I signed up for the A-Z blogging challenge, one of the requirements was to turn off word verifications for comments. Why? Because while Captcha or word verifications deters bot comments, it also deters human comments.
On the day I deactivated Captcha, I had this conversation with my friends:
Me: Grrr I want to comment on your blog but captcha doesn’t want to work. Maybe we need to turn it off.
Ngangi: How?? I hate captcha!
Me: Wait, will figure it out. Settings. Comments. Show word verification. No.
Ngangi: Ok done!
Me: The risk, though, is that we’ll get spam comments. But hopefully we won’t get too much, no?
Chi: No we won’t get spam coz we’re not popular!
Me: Spam as in robots, Chi. The purpose of captcha is to deter robot posting. So I think even if we’re not popular we can still get spammed.
Ngangi: Who’s behind the robots??
Me: Err… I don’t know. That is the limit of my knowledge hahaha.
Ngangi: Hahaha. Blogs really have a different world! They actually have robots LOL!
Chi: There are robots IRL?!! Haha!
Me: LOL I guess they’re not really robots with bodies. Probably just computer robots. They call them bots for short.
Then suddenly, Gelle jumps in with this:
Dear Reader,
If you’re a robot, please don’t leave any comments. But if you’re human, please write a comment that proves you are one… maybe by telling me what is the essence of being a human? I don’t know. Get creative! That’s the whole point, isn’t it? Humans can think, robots can’t.
