I have a confession to make. I am wary of elevators.
He has more reason to be wary though |
Whenever I step into an elevator, my heart always constricts a bit because one of these things could happen:
(1) My cellphone or my foot could fall into the gap between the floor and the elevator.
(2) The doors could squish me between them which would probably hurt. A lot.
(3) It would suddenly stop working and I would be trapped in there and worst case scenario, I could run out of air and die.
(4) Its cables would snap and it would go hurtling to the ground, killing me.
I know, I watch too much TV. I blame the last one in particular to an episode in Alias where someone dies when the cables on his elevator are cut.
This reminds me of a conversation I had with my friend Mildred when we had an elevator incident. We had gotten inside our office elevator when it suddenly stopped working, stopped making sounds, nothing. So naturally, we panicked and started thinking about how to survive.
Me: What if this elevator plunges to the ground, what do we do?
Mildred: I know, we should lie flat on the floor to lessen the impact!
Me: No, I think we should jump up right before the elevator touches the ground!
Castle gets stuck in an elevator and has the same dilemma that we had. See what I mean about too much television? |
Turns out we had just forgotten to press the button for the ground floor. Yeesh.
P.S. You know what’s another E word? Eight! My blog passed the eight year mark last March 29 and it didn’t even occur to me until now! I almost always never forget that. OMG I am getting so old. Last year I even made a 7th anniversary blog and listed my seven most memorable blogs. Please check it out on this link.

This post is part of the A to Z Challenge, a blog hop that goes through the alphabet for all the days of April except Sundays. I have decided to go with the theme of Alliterations.

LOL @ your solution if the elevator plunged to the ground! 😀 I know some people are too paranoid and scared of elevators! It is ok! I am paranoid about lizards and rats… if I see one, I can give the poor creatures heart attacks with my shrieks! 😀
Dee says
I don't like rats either but I am fine with lizards. As I child I used to purposely try to catch lizards just to watch them lose their tails on purpose. I guess I was a weird kid huh.

I'm too playful on elevators for the comfort of my family. I'll hop around, or even bounce against loose panels. I trust the engineering, since it's tested for so much strain. Yet something could always go wrong – I hadn't meditated on half of your fears.
Dee says
I am NEVER getting on an elevator with you. XP

Hello Dee. How nice that you stopped by my blog to say hello. I love meeting new blog friends. Your elevator post makes me smile. I think we all have those thoughts a wee bit each time we step on an elevator.

Sorry…my iPad keeps freezing up and not letting me type. Maybe it thinks I've said enough…lol
I watch Castle too and love it.
(My iPad froze again). Yes, we are Mormon. Tell your mom hi for us. Our religion brings us comfort and joy. By the way we have a good friend named Dee and that is the middle name of the baby we lost. Dees are good people!
Please visit my blog again. Have a good day.
Dee says
Thank you for stopping by and being nice enough to leave a long comment despite your ipad freezing all the time. I have the same problem when I leave comments with my iphone though. I wonder if it's because Steve Jobs (Apple) hated Google (Blogger) so much? Haha.

I will tell her you said hi.

Oh gosh, I hope I live up to my name!

Yes, I shall be by to visit

What really worries me on elevators is when it is almost full and a rather large person gets on. I am always worried that they will cause the cable to snap.
Dee says
Hahahaha this made me laugh! That is a valid fear indeed! And one that has been added to my list. Eeps.

Love the alliterations! And no worries, the Mythbusters did an episode on jumping in a falling elevator.

Can't find anything real quick about lying flat. But I'd venture a guess and say, um no. :)

Any way, thanks for the fun alliterations! <3

Jamie Dement (LadyJai)<br

Wow, thank you for this information, you even substantiated it with a video! I am touched. 🙂

I used to have scary elevator dreams years ago when I used to work at a job that was on the 6th floor. There was a wonky old elevator in my dorm at Emerson that would often stop between floors, or when the door opened, you were either below or above the floor. Needless to say I was in decent shape that year b/c I opted to walk to the 5th floor.
Dee says
Yikes, what a nightmare of an elevator! If I had been in your place I am sure I would have done the same.
