Overwhelming Obsession

I think I may have a problem. I tend to get obsessed. About what? About anything, really. Let me list a bunch of random stuff I have gotten obsessed with over the years.

  • X-Men
  • Barbie dolls
  • Sailormoon
  • Sweet Valley Twins
  • Clarissa Explains It All
  • Greek Mythology
  • The Titanic
  • Charmed and witchcraft
  • All the guys on my C is for Celebrity Crush Confessions list
  • Purple things
  • Dieting
  • Making videos
  • Harry Potter
  • The royal wedding
  • Glee
  • Hunger Games
  • Draw Something
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • Candy Crush
  • Sherlock

And when I say obsessed, I mean REALLY obsessed, to unhealthy levels, as in it takes over my every waking thought and free time and life, and I become a slave to whatever happened to catch my fancy at the moment.

For example? When I was in high school, I happened to read about a Greek god, I think it was Apollo, in Christopher Pike’s The Immortal. I got so fascinated by Greek mythology that I spent all my free hours (recess, lunch, after school) researching it to death. This was before the days of Google, so I did it old school – by reading encyclopedias and trawling through the library’s card catalogues to find books devoted to these myths and checking them all out of the library.

These days when I get hit by such an obsession, I have Google at my fingertips, so it’s worse. A LOT worse. I get very little sleep during these stages. Before I had my own computer, I even used to go to internet cafes and pay by the hour just so I could read up on Charmed and witchcraft!

I lose my sense of logic and find myself helplessly succumbing to weird whims, like buying a replica Kate Middleton engagement ring (royal wedding mania) or a mockingjay necklace (Hunger Games) or Sherlock-inspired shirts (Sherlock) or a yellow umbrella (How I Met Your Mother) or a printer just so I could print thinspiration pictures for my visualization board. And I’m powerless to stop myself! Seriously, it’s like being infatuated. :-/

Objects of Obsession

And what do you think is my obsession at the moment?

Why, it’s this A-Z challenge! It’s all I can think of these days! I have a full time job that gets me home at past 9pm on most nights, yet when I get home, no matter how tired I am, I open my laptop to eke out words and find the accompanying pictures to go with them and find myself going to sleep at around 2 AM. And when I’m not in front of my laptop, I’m thinking.. hmmm… what words start with the letter – ? and composing blogs in my head. I’ve stopped stalking my friends on social networks, preferring to stalk my fellow A-Z challengers on Feedly RSS reader instead.

I am enjoying the journey though, but still I can’t help but wonder if maybe I need intervention. ;P
