I’m usually a smart kid, quick to pick up on clues to the point that friends have called me a mind reader or even Sherlock which is super flattering because I love that guy, but oh, where was I? Right… I’m usually smart, but for reasons I can’t explain I suddenly turn dumb during my birthday.
Like last year, my flatmate Cate handed me a “clue” as to where I could find my present, and I looked in all the wrong places before finally finding the right “rack of clothes” being referred to in the note, which should have been obvious from the get-go.
This year, it happened again.
Right before midnight of yesterday, I was trying to get some sleep when there were several knocks on my door. I opened it to find Cate outside my door, videotaping me with her ipad. Later on she discovered that she had been holding her ipad upside down. So apparently it’s not just me who has brain problems during my birthday. LOL.
So I walked outside to find that there were cupcakes with lit up candles, pizza, siopao, and our favorite Pocca apple soda on our dining room table, as well as several posters put up on my door and the dining room wall. Awww!
I know, I know. I have the sweetest flatmates. I bet you wanna move in with me right about now.
So I closed my eyes, made a wish, and blew out the candles. Then Cate handed me this handmade card.
I was confused. Why would they (my LZ friends) give me a naked man? When did I ever ask for this?
And Dumberella over here (yours truly) kept calling the guy inside as Chris Hemsworth when he is clearly Chris Evans. I mix up my avengers, sorry!
Then I noticed that there were presents on the table as well and I opened them to find a sleeveless peplum top and a black dress with the cutest flippy skirt. But underneath the clothes lay the best gift of the lot – and the moment I saw the red-wrapped rectangular box with a Sephora gift tag, I knew exactly what was inside:
And that’s when the card made sense! What a clever play of words! And the thing is, I should have caught on immediately because I had made a wish list which included this in it! I guess I just totally didn’t expect that they would splurge and actually get that for me! in tears from being so touched
The next day I had a joint birthday celebration with my friend Jemma, who had hers on the 2nd. I actually had no plans of celebrating my birthday this year because I’m done celebrating aging, but Jemma wanted to and we always do this together every year, so I decided not to be a spoilsport about it.
I have low EQ, so I immediately used the gifts I got last night – the black dress and the makeup, and Jems said, “Wow! I didn’t get the memo that dressing up was required!” So I told her to get dressed as well, and asked her to wear a black dress with the same scarf that I used, which I knew she also had. And so… tada! Birthday twins! ๐
We rode cabs to Pasir Ris Park and found out that the barbeque pit we had reserved, which was the only one available, was an extremely long walk from the bus stop and car park. Gah.
Nantoy even joked that the bushes flanking our side was already in Malaysia and we needed passports to go there. Sorry, guests! Luckily, everyone was a good sport about it.
Though we didn’t have any other activity planned aside from eating and talking, we had a lot of fun! It pays to have an entertainer in the crowd, and this commendation belongs to Nantoy.
I guess it also helped that we had delicious Filipino food: pancit, lechon paksiw, sisig, leche flan, cassava cake, and puto. Our caterers were Anette (cp# 8437 2856) for the mains and Dorothy (cp# 9115 6706) for the desserts.
When night time came and the mosquitoes were starting to bother us, we decided to transfer the party to Jemma’s flat.
We kept eating and drinking and laughing to hilarious TV shows on TFC (Magandang Gabi Vice and Wansapanataym).
When I got home, I couldn’t help but smile because I had so much fun plus I had all these amazing presents! Aside from the ones I had already mentioned earlier on this blog and the ipad mini and Furla wallet advanced gifts I got from my brother and a best friend, I also got these: power bank for my gadgets, Cyber Colors makeup brush cleanser, Maybelline rocket volume express mascara, leopard print sleep mask, and a Tom Ford luxury lipstick in flamingo shade. I have the most amazing friends! THANKS AGAIN YOU GUYS!
